Samsung U600 – World’s slimmest slider mobile phone – Buy Now!

Published February 16, 2007 by Harriet Rhodes in Mobile Phones, News

Update: Samsung have just launched an improved version of the U600, the Samsung G600 with a 5 mega pixel camera.

Update: The Samsung U600 is now in stock and available to buy online now from Dialaphone.co.uk! Click here to see all the latest deals on the Samsung U600, including a Free Sony PS3, Free X360, Free Nintendo Wii, with line rental from just £1.99

One of the most exciting launches at the 3GSM World Congress was that of the Samsung U600 (Click to Buy Samsung U600), surely one of the big phones of 2007; a return to form for samsung mobile phones.

Samsung_U600_Front.jpg

It’s one of four mobile phones released as part of Samsung’s new Ultra Edition II range, which will be Samsung’s flagship range in 2007. The phones all come in a stylish graphite grey and feature a new battery enhancing technology called the Optimized Power Usage Solution. The music playback facilities are improved as well thanks to a partnership with Bang & Olufsen.

The U600, referred to as the Ultra Edition 10.9, is undoubtedly the highlight of the range and looks set to be Samsung’s premium mass market offering in competition with Sony Ericsson’s update on the K800i, the K810i, and Nokia’s new N95.

Samsung U600 Angle1.jpg

It’s a stylish slider phone with a 3.2 megapixel camera, 2.2″ QVGA display, and a microSD memory card slot.

Samsung U600 Close2.jpg

It’s also incredibly thin for a slider with a width of just 10.9mm, a trick repeated by the other models in the Ultra Line II range with the U300 becoming the world slimmest clamsell phone and the U100 the world’s slimmest phone! The other phone in the range is the U700 slider.

Recommended Buys have awarded the Samsung U600 four stars in their Samsung U600 Review

I have this phone for almost a year now, and I have dropped it for more than 20 times and still it hasn’t broken down. Incredible! I also think it is fantasticly desinged. When mine breaks down I’m gonna buy it again! Pity it hasn’t got touchscreen though…

To change the ring tone or msg tone into mp3 You go into
    1.Menu
    2.Settings
    3.Sound setting
4.Meesage tone (press the joystick to open message tone) then
    5. text message(open) then press poystick to select first line (where it says tone) then while pressing the joystick a menu will come up with (Download sound, favourite sound ,music, default sound) press Music to select your mp3 and then press the touch to select and it then press to say back then it will ask you to save or no.
    Hope it helps

    To Michael.
I’ve noticed that you listed most things from that book. I’ve got my phone from my husband as my birthday present. I’ve managed to understand how it work.

The problem I found is the touch buttons. By mistake you make a call and spend without knowing that you phoned somebody. Indeed you answer the call by sliding that cover up but as soon you slide the cover up to answer the call the touch buttons are locked and even if you slide down as you think you ended the call you didnt. You still on the phone.

Also it take a while to be able to close the call. By presing the joystick and the phone sign on the cover (at the same time )eventually will end the call. But I found that it take 2/3 attempts to end the call, which means that you loose money.

Other problem is that when you want to have different muzic (mp3 as a ring tone) for different number you need to copy the name and number onto the phone and then add music to your contact. But when you want to change the ring tone for that number you end up copying from sim to phone each time you attempt to do that and you end up with 5/n times the same number.

There is not posibilities to install tomtom or other navigation system.

I am still unsure to keep the phone or I shall return back to the shop.
The only good thing I guess is that has FM, you could have 2gb microSD card which help you to have lots of music, but by having such amount of music on your phone means that the phone respond very slow.
Using the camera: it is very slow which means you need to stay still for 3/4min to get the picture, but if you got fast moving objects you dont have time to take the picture. The quality of the pic. its ok not briliant, for those who are taking pic most of the time I would advise you get something that has 5mpix up.

    I like the interface though.
Hope that those who realy want this phone they should look for more reviews about it.
Dialaphone has got the u600 for £89.95 on pay as you go. If you are on contract I advise you get a better phone.

I like the phone all in all… just the touch buttons are annoying..
Photo’s are great.. love the front and back camera options.
The blue button in the middle’s blue stuff is coming off though.. I guess this phone takes some getting use to… had the D800…
BUT WHY SAMSUNG…? with the D800 you couldn’t change the msg alert tones and now with the U700 you can’t change it at all????????? the manual isn’t user friendly.. I’m reading about 4 factory msg alert tone settings? where are they??????
@ least u can set your own Mp3 music as ur ringtone….. * sigh of relief *

This is a really nice phone, if anyone is buying it on the O2 network, be aware that they have disabled the delivery report function. When I rang up to ask why it wasn’t working on my phone, the answer I was given was that they have had too many complaints. Since you have the choice of switching the delivery reports on or off on your phone settings, I find it hard to understand why they have taken the choice away from the consumer when it’s a standard phone feature and some people do use it.

nice little phone, nice features, but…screen broke after three days and i was being careful. Has a bullet shaped crack on the underside of the outer screen, probably easy to change but still, a bit annoying!

Music play is great! rival to the Walkman series in my honest opinion

Does have a problem of accidently calling somebody. I used to have the other touch screen phone yet never made accidental calls, have do so three times with this one!

Sound is ace! Love the ring&vibrate feature. Texting is easy and fun. Contacts are great to manage. Battery life is brilliant! To be honest i can’t understand why people are mentioning that! All in all i’m very happy with this phone – worth the money and some!

this phone is brilliant i brought 1 from another shop … not dial a phone…

you can have personalised ringtones (save the mp3 on your phone memory)
and message tones …easy to conect to your computer just install software first …
bit awkward taking pictures (long gap between pressing capture and taking pic) k800i was better… sound player takes too long to load after you click a song prob needs updated software …. external memory can go as high as memory card can go 4gb is highest i think at the mo for micro sd…

overall nice phone if you have patience but if you want a music player or a camera phone i would suggest the k810i or w580i

ps you cannot change themes on this phone so far had no luck just stuck with the houses of parliment and big ben …nice screen saver that changes throughtout the day but why a picture of london …im from birmingham and hate it

    hope this helps …

I got mine a week ago and I love it!. Not only that it’s slim and stylist but the features are awesome. If you compare other phones that are almost as slim as this phone they don’t have all the good features and perform as well. The touch buttons are easy to get use to. I got the white one because it stands out from the other dark colors. So far so good. The battery last quite long on mine. battery is only 20 bucks i think so im not so worry about it.

This phone is so nice… I just can’t believe it that Samsung made such a good phone. U700 is bigger and fatter so I would rather recommend U600

I like this phone, but would it be worth the while to wait for the U700. How long would it be till the U700 comes out? What available colours does the U700 come in and does it have touch pad buttons like the U600?

hi i have this phone its really nice! i had w800i before and i still s ony is the best! so i feel liek i have gone backwards! although it looks really good the battery life is poor… compared to sony but thats a comprimise you have to make! other phones out are not that great either n73 is now old so is w880i and so is k800i so it leaves u with this samsung or the new prada LG phone but i dont trust LG. everything esle is lovely about this phone ,,, i think its better than d900 with features that they have tuned to higher spec! alsoi it has bang and olufsen sound u cna notice this an improvemnt from d900 but still not as good as sony but then it does not claim to be a walkman phone as it were so its still very good. so this phone is for those who want something sleek and beautiful! and are prepared to make one comprimise wich is the battery life!…. i guess u can charge it every 2 days… so go buy it!!

**Just to answer a few question people have**

    - You cannot have the phone on silent and still get the alarm to be audible, it will only vidbrate.

    - You can have the phone vibrate and ring at the same time for incoming calls.

    - You cannot have vibrate and tone at the same time for messages, only one or the other.

    - When using the ‘Themed’ dialing displays, you cannot turn off keypad tones. You can only turn them off when you use the conventional numbers as your dialing display.

    - With keypad tones turned off, ensure you have the keypad tone volume set up if you wish to hear camera noises and power noises. Having the volume up but the tones off will still make no keypad tones.

    - You can change all camera tones from withing the camera settings when you start up the camera.

    - The camera has a flash.

    - The max video resolution is CIF, not QCIF as some have been saying.

    - There is a built in FM radio.

    - The main number pad is not touch sensitive, it uses easy to use button. Only the 4 buttons around the navigation keys are touch sensitive. These are not as sesitive as people make out, they are in fact very easy to use. Of course, they are touch sensitive so be careful with accidental presses. You soon learn to avoid this and its not hard!

    - The touch sensitive buttons lock when the phone is in a call (so they dont get set off by your face). You have to press the power button or ‘i’ to unlock, then press the red phone.

    - I advise you simply use the slide to answer and end calls… sliding up answers, then when you done, slide closed to hang up. Much easier!

    - The phone allows you to set in setting whether you want pictures videos saved to the phone or to a memory card. You can save directly to a memory card.

    - The music player allows you to sync directly with Windows Media Player if you want. Overwise you can simply drag and drop using the Samsung software.

    - To use the FM radio you must have the headphones plugged in as they act as the ariel. It wont allow it to start overwise.

    - The phones screen turns off during charging (some older Samsungs left the screen on throughout the whole charge).

    - The phone is generally well built. It is however, due to is thinness, not 100% solid. The slide wobbles FRACTIONALLY. This however does not at all feel like a weakness or a problem. The phone does not feel like it will break.

    - The two ’softkeys’ and the ‘i’ button cannot have their function changed. They remain as ‘Menu’, ‘Contacts’ and ‘Internet’ respectively. You can however change the shortcuts on the navigation keys, eg. press left to start a new text message. This can give you access to ‘My Shortcuts’ aswell.

    - ‘My Shortcuts’ can be customised to whatever you like.

    - The phone supports 2Gb MicroSD cards.

    - The battery is not as bad as people say. Its not brilliant either. I would say it last 4 full days unused, 2 full days on general use (some calls, music, radio, etc) and only 1 full day of heavy use. I wouldnt say its a problem, my last phone was similar and you quickly get used to putting it on charge every other night before bed.

    - The battery also has a fast quick charge. If its low and your going out, 15 minutes charging will massively boost it to ensure you can make lots of calls that night without worry.

    - You can watch videos fullscreen, landscape.

    - You can view pictures full screen, however, there are odd small zoom logos etc on the screen overlaying. Not bad, but not pure picture!

    - Finally, READ THE MANUAL!! Most of what your asking is in there. Just have patients and spend 2 minutes looking it up in the manual and you will most likely find what your after. The PDF of the manual off Samsungs site is probably the easy way!

** I cant think of anything else that has been asked or could be useful right now. I hope this helps you. Ive had this phone for a few days now and love it. I highly recommend it, you wont be disappointed. It is by far the best Samsung phone. They have fixed all the silly things from old Samsungs and have stolen a few neat tricks from Sony Ericsson! If anyone does have any further questions, please ask and I will try to answer.

i recently bought the u600… the first one broke after a day (the touch screen buttons failed) the second one broke after a week (the screen broke).. the phone is brilliant but it is just too flimsy and easily broken!! i think samsung needs to re-think the design of this one!

I got two of these last week for my wife and I. Smart phone, slim, works well, all the tweaks you want – i.e. message tones changing, flash, good software to link to PC and organise contacts, decent memory and easily upgradeable. Good standby on battery (once you have finished playing with it!) 2 touch sensitive buttons on screen. You can change fonts and colours and themes on screen, sometimes difficult to work out the functions if you have come from another make but soon get the hang of it. Radio is good and mp3 player has good sound. All in all best phone we have had in 10 years. Ask me in 2 years what relaibility is like!

    Cool!

Phone will be released on 9th April 2007 in Uk.

Source says yes there is a flash (tbc)

Point of having 1 camera is because the phone is not 3G.. and the less features question is simply so that its is available in the size shown above.

    Ps.
Can’t wait to get my hands on mine.

Samsung said it will be out in april, a comfurmed (sp?) from O2 it is out on the 9th of april 2007. I’m looking forward to this, however i think the U700 has more feature so while everyone gets this in april wait till may/june fot the U700 as you know with Samsung they don’t release lots of phones, i.e. D500 then few months later the better D600, then the D800/810/900 came out.

    p.s. looks sexy as :P
