Sony Ericsson K850i to challenge Nokia N95

Published March 14, 2007 by Dialaphone in Uncategorized

Here are some early pictures of a new Sony Ericsson, dubbed the Sofia, and eventually to be called the K850i.

SE K850i.jpg

Since Nokia announced the N95 with a 5 megapixel camera, the pressure has been on Sony Ericsson, as the market leaders with their Cybershot range of cameraphones, to follow suit. The K850 looks to be their answer. The funny-looking square in the middle is the d-pad which merges with the number keypad to free up space for a decent sized screen.

Reports say that the K850 will be unveiled in Quarter 2 2007, and possibly as early as the CeBit exhibition in Germany later this week.

There are also details of a follow-up to Sony Ericsson’s M600i messaging devoice, codenamed “Maria” and set to be called the M610i. It has a 3.2 megapixel camera with autofocus.

Just to add.. the only thing that SE loses out is on Software for working people. Would it be possible that a software upgrade or program be added in to be able to use Microsoft Office? Cause for those on the move and working need a lot of these to edit which i know Nokia phones have. I think its the last thing SE needs to dominate Nokia completely. Hope SE can do something about it. Love my k800i, more reliable for pictures and music than n series

    Hi There
I have had my SE K850i for about two months and have had awesome fun with it. Despite it being a cybershot phone, features, speed, mxit, music (big improvement), trackID, bass, MEGABASS(R), the 5.0 megapixel camera with dual flash and so on.

As an all rounder phone SE K850i is an excellent choice. Slight draw back is the “call and cancell soft-dial buttons tend to wear. Hasnt happened to me yet although has to my cousin. Battery life is excellent and so is the music playing despite the phone not being a walkman. As for menus, layout and accessebility, easy and simple. Quick to access. However this phone not suited for persons who are more business like.

That’s where your Nokia comes in…

    But my choice….

SE K850i is the way to go. No hassles as such.

ive got the se w580i shake phone its the best phone they have made i love my new phone and the battery life is great

I have a Sony Ericsson k850i, Anyone waiting for theirs to arrive in the post will be very happy with it once it does, the only fault is that your fingerprints will show up on it so you have to keep wipeing it, but apart from that the camera is extreamly good, takes sharp photograph’s, it even flashes out the S.O,S, help signal, or you can use the flash as a “find the keyhole” touch. it will stay on for a minuite. it has lots of functions to play with that will keep most “big boys” happy for a week or more, the touch keys will take a little to get used to, but the keys thenselves are easy to use. hope you all get as much pleasure from it as I did…well, it cost enough :-)

  6. luppe

luppe her… SE is the bedst..:)

  7. olivia

yeah right , well just because SE make a 5 mega picels camara doesnt mean it goes again the NOKIA becuse the nokia had other features that the SE actully doesnt have and thats probley becuase people dont use half the features on the NOKIA

and as well to the point about how the SE looks i agreee on the picture the SE does look quiet bad , but look at other pictures of it , and it looks much better ;)

    i say SE

I like sony ericssons mobile phone hope they will produce much good as nokia N95 8GB

  14. kjm

I am wailting for my new k850i to come in the next few days. I loved the k800i and thats why I am sticking with SE!!! They are the leading mobile phone company at present and as for nokia, their day has came and went!

  15. Dieden

Bob March… Did you know that SE does nnot release their phones in every continent? The “i” you are complaining about is standing for “International”. That is to say, it is meant to be sold worldwide.

  16. fitz

the k850i is the best phone than the others……
    congratulation sony ericsson….

  17. sher boy

how many mega pixles does the SE-k850i have?

  18. g_b

se’s are way better phones than nokia’s, i’ve got the k800i justnow & will be getting the k850i tomorrow look @ 1 of the links thats been posted above giving a site where you can compare pic’s from different phones the se k800i’s 3.2 megapixel camera takes far better pictures than the nokia n95′s 5 megapixel camera & as also said before se phones are built to last unlike nokia with their n series bricks that sqeak crash & dont function like their supposed too

i used to be all for nokia phones but times have changed & so have there phones (USELESS BRICKS) ………… take pride in your sony ericsson…….. bin all nokias.

  19. Chris

i’ve been reviewing both phones, havnt come into physical contact with either. the k850i seems to be the one though.
one thing that makes me think twice tho is that nokia has a 16million colour screen and sony has a 262k screen.. would i even notice the difference?

  20. kam

no point having a phone with soo many functions if it slow, it crashes or just restarts, the cameras slow on my frnds n95 he sold it straight away and the n95′s bat crap u myt aswel keep a spair one just incase. SE looks plasticy buh it luks nice better camera and all th functions you need in a normal phone e.g. contacts, sms, cam, video recorder etc… wa els u need? K850i much better and much reliable.

  21. Danielle

I thought the nokia N95 was the best fone eva untill i found it was the slowest fone ive eva had ive still got it and not happy its very slow

  22. Si

Hi all been busy but got the phone, didn’t know the bottom of the screen was touch sensitive, so options select and back are on the screen and a sensor picks it up what you have selected, Not sure. Also camera a little temperamental, as in sometimes the flash works sometimes not, so get a dark pic and have to take another even though checked the settings. Also it may be me, but it looks like the sides of the phone light up on adverts etc, but mine does not. It seems a top phone though, will stick another comment on in the next few days to see if it gets better with use, Oh and the menu is a little different as in my folders is in the Organiser and Tools section.

  23. Si

Hi All, as you may already know Nokia offer a software flash (Firmware Upgrade) as the first models had probs with software, and still do on newer one’s but not as bad, I get my K850i Mon, botch with post and all, so the handsets are available now.
Will try and put another post on then, to comment on the phone.

  24. Bunx

    Nokia rulz!!!

  25. Carrim

We’re expecting stock of the K850i tomorrow!! :-)
I’ve had the chance to play with a model already, and it’s an improvement in pretty much EVERY way on previous S.E’s (apart from the slightly ‘plastic’ feel of th casing) if that’s possible !?!
As usual, Sony Ericsson have pretty much thought of everything when it comes to this model…. It even has the old-style ‘photo light’ aswell as the Xenon cybershot flash (so no more fumbling for things in the dark anymore).
I’m not a big fan of the Velvet blue colour… So I think the Lumo Green is gonna be the ONE!!
My old K800i has taken an absolute BATTERING over the 2 years I’ve had it…. I even throw it across the shop to demonstrate how rugged it is to customers (because I know it’ll still work fine… and it has!).. NO JOKE!! So all that remains to be seen is wether the K850i can take the same kind of abuse!
If it wasn’t for the fact that there weren’t any test handsets available at the time this handset would DEFINITELY have won Phone of the Year (instead of the Samsung G600) hands down !!
It’s close…. If this handset lives up to the potential it’s got…. NOKIA are well and truly finished as serious competition (as they have been for a long time), nd the world will know it!!! BIG UP SONY ERICSSON!!!

  26. Carl D

Common knowledge that Nokia design their phone software to slow down after 12 months of use anyway, so everyone thinks their phones arent any good after the year and upgrade to another Nokia (mugs!)
Nokia were good… up till 2003. Then came colour screens… and Nokia became absolute tosh.
Had Nokia from 1999 to 2005. Got my first Sony Ericsson, the K750i in 2005 and never looked at another phone brand since. Had my W810i now for 18months and the only problem has been with it rebooting when calling some numbers, but this is very very rare.

Of course the K850i is going to be a great phone… All my mug mates who’ve got their N95′s on 18 month contracts, sayin about how good this and that is on their phone…. I just think ‘poor ba$tard, you’re stuck with that now’. I think K850i’s gonna be one of the most successful phones of recent times…

You always know a desperate phone manufacturer when they start releasing phones that are pink.

  27. Ali

So when will this phone be available then, I’ve been waiting for about six months!!

  28. Rohit Baranwal

Nokia’s rule gone.SE phones have evolved to give the best that Nokia phones can’t deliver now, talking about their so much hyped N series. It isn’t that good as they claim it to be.

  29. Rohit Baranwal

I am eagerly waiting for the SE K850i.Right now, I own a W810i and I accept that in matters of robustness and reliability, SE now beats Nokia.I have dropped my phone for 15-20 times on the floor and like magic, it still works fine.My friend dropped his N72 and its camera cover was ruined! The N series from Nokia is good, but not as good as SE W and K series.N series looks more or less like Nokia’s abortive attempts to include high end features in their poor quality devices and that really sucks.Nokia is good at low end phones only.

  32. RajinderJaura (India)

Sony Ericsson K-850 i shall be in our hands before 19th oct. (Ours 30th marriage-aniversary.

  33. dean

your all crazy the blind will lead the blind, this site is very biased. nokia rule ok

  34. J1

N95 is a hideous brick with zero battery life. whos gonna watch a widescreen movie on the bus? the battery will die before you get to the end, thats if you don’t get sliced up and robbed by some haribo fuelled preteens. this looks stylish compared to the n95

  35. Al

Hmmm i would proabably buy a K610i before i’d buy any Nokia N series so i really don’t see what the fuss is about. I’ve got an N73, no sorry correction i’ve had 5 N73′s as there failure to actually operate as a calculator let alone a mobile phone is rather pathetic. My mate bought an N95 3 weeks ago and just had it replaced there. Same story. Exact same goes for most people regardless of what network they are on that i know own N73′s.
So for all people wanna argue about the difference between an N95 and the K850i, here’s a hint : Features have to actually work for your argument to be valid. I vote Nokia N Series mobiles be voted the most useless technological invention since the sinclair C4.

  36. shan

N95 has a cheap Plastic. very shame :(

  37. Mister T

N95 and k850i are 2 TOTALLY different phone
although k850 will be a tough reliable beast with the best camera on a phone to date
N95 is a smart phone!, has the features but even those are flakey and battery rinsing

ive played with the n95, not bad not good value for money.
If the k850 is anything like the reliable k800/k810s then im defo gonna be upgrading to it in october. I think it looks smart! then k800 was not stylish, thank god they put some effort into the looks on this 1

  38. Drew

    Nice1 Chris. Contract cancellations & PACs pending…

  39. Chris

Early October I think, I’ve heard the 3rd and 8th October mentioned on a couple of forums. Will depend on the Networks too having their own release dates.

  40. Drew

It’s good to see such varied & valued feedback between Nokia (especially the N95) & SE. The little enthusiasm I’ve heard about N95 (existing customers inc) suggest more is less with the model. Horses for courses everyone has a preference, I owned a Nokia for a couple of days, took the thing straight back for a refund, it just wasn’t user friendly. I’ve have SE’s W800, seems like forever (2plus years & still working effortlessly without problem, the camera & mp3 player are still exceptional ) waiting for the boffins to excel themselves with a worthy successor (that’s not to say other models produced in SE’s range are not outstanding, just a wee bit same old remix) so yes the Kate50 is looking & sounding very nice, virtually identicle in size to K800i/10i with sufficient technical updates to bring it into contention with other manufacturers.
Any more details on the release date please Nick? I’m aware SE have posted the month of October…Thanks

  41. Chris

I’ve just had an N95 on contract but i’m gonna sell it now and buy the k850i when it comes out. If your used to a SonyEricsson then it’s really hard to get used to an N95, it just feels really big and clunky. Even though the video and internet are impressive, it just hasn’t got all the little features and quirks that make the k800i/k850i series of phones so great

  42. Rab

Im waiting on the delivery of my 4th N95, in 4 months, today! Gettiing seriously annoyed with its shoddy build and parts which means i keep having to get replacements from o2! If this new one breaks i think for the 1st time ever il be getting a SE! Alot of my friends have one and only really have had bother with the joystick which is why i have avoided them! From the pictures tho the K850i doesn’t have a joy stick! :D

  43. RajinderJaura (India)

Come what way I am Diwana (found of) SE-K850i’s picture & sound oualities

  44. joe

im just about to get a new contract phone and i cant make my mind up between the new sony eriksn with the 3.2 megapix cam and the nokia n95. in have to pay 40.00 quid extra on the n95 and pay and extra 3quid a month insurnce. any hepl as i dont own any and never used either. the n95 is swaying me with the gps but im still in 2 minds. please help.

  45. Rajinder Jaura (India)

What kind of mobile is this without price ?

  46. Raz

Look, the n95 might have more features, but the build quality is rubbish, and i knw as i have one. I also have a sony erricsson and i dropped it countless times but its built like a brick and after 3 years of constant damaging, it is still is resonable condition, and this the same for all SE fones, with nokias as soon as you drop it, your garateed that it will be useless. i would rather pay £250 for a good built fone , then dish out £500 and keep worryin about when im gonna drop it and break it into tiny peices….

  47. vicky

r u due for an upgrade….. it’s worth to wait for this fantastic lookin k850i loaded with pocket full of features similar to n95,however the phone looks funny in the picture above when compare to an actual picture in a website.k850i looks a lot sleek than k800i and is dynamic with its camera capabilities no wonder this phone will rule above nokia n95′s……………….the k850i has the looks and the multimedia ability to deliver good quality pic’s ,music and connectivity.

  48. Ify

Sony Ericsson is more consistant than a Nokia. And their phones are built to last. I Think that the K850i will kick N95 ass! The Sony Ericsson is seriously hi-tek but not complicated to use at all. But with the Nokia there are too many buttons and folders which are just not useful. Compare the latest Sony Ericsson phone to 1 5 years ago and do the same with a Nokia. You can tell that the Nokia “changed” drastically to keep up with the competition and with Sony the features are stil the same, it jus has new functions and features.

  49. Colin McClair

I recently upgraded my contract phone on the Orange network from a SE K800i to a Nokia N95, It took me 2 days to lose all confidence in Nokia’s N95, I have now upgraded to the highly reliable SE K810i and look forward to getting my hands on the K850i, Which is without a shadow of a doubt far superior than any of the Nokia range, Ten years ago I wouldn’t have had anything other than a Nokia, Now I would only use one as a door wedge, NOKIA SUCKS !!!

  50. lloyd samuels

nokias are pants they are nothing more than phones stuffed full of useless extras that dont even work. the n95 that thing in his pocket on the advert how big are his pockets its like a brick with a screen!! i wouldnt even give my mum or nana a nokia!! this pic is rubbish but the websites pic does it justice the k850i will wipe the floor with the n73 and 95 i cant wait for mine i just hope they have sorted out the headphone jack as i wen through about 5 sets on my w800i as the flimsy pins easily get bent then wont work.

  51. syah

dont no if you talking about the function..
but.. for imaging.. look at this..

    se 3.2mp cyber-shot beat nokia 5.0mp
the se cam take more sharpen that the nokia..

  52. Nate

I recently went on a short vacation to one of the coastal cities in South Africa. To my great surprise there was this Nseries Hit sharade promoting these phones in a busy shopping mall. Last night back in my home city I experienced the same thing. Nokia is trying to push these models really badly onto the public. The worst part of the problem is that the nice looking promoters dont know a thing about these phones. So they are generally bullshitting the public. Nokia Nseries phones dissapoints big time. SE K800 and SE K800i Best phones in the world. True bout the tempermental joystick (the use of keyboard shortcuts helps navigate the phone easily though). Track ID and Mega Bass could have been included but was then only availible on Walkman Branded phones. My stereo blutooth SE WALKMAN attachment also kicks. IT beats my Seinheiser, Beringer and Phililps headphones handsdown in audio quality. And if you look closely, Sony Ericsonn got alot of exiting Hi Fi products to back up these brilliant phones. Nokia anyone

  53. manoj kumar c

i love SE k850i . can anyone tell me the price of this phone, mailto manojcpe@.gmail.com

  54. JB Ronquillo

I presently own a SE K800. Been using it for a year and it works well – no problem.
Nokia has too many moving parts that will eventually wear or broke. Not built to last.

  55. Slavoljub

Can some body tell me the price of the Sony Ericsson K850i? “Franky_stip@yahoo.com” I love this phone. NOKIA sucks!

  56. Toffee

How can any1 in ther rite mind compare this excellent handset with a cheap shabbx lookin unreliable piece of c**p like the N95 is beyond comprehension… Plz seek psychiatric help if u fall in2 this category

  57. farah

SEk850i even looks bulky but functions always better than other mobile phone including NOKIA or Nokia N95 :-) )

I was using all my life for Nokia’s..guess what the functions always same till now the phone even have no torchlight,
    Sorry meh!!:-))

  58. Wecl

SEk850i looks bulky and its keypad doesnt provide much convenient tap. N95 provides more professional look and feel. But most importantly N95 has got much more better functions than the SE’s.

  59. Gman

K810i – is a top quality phone. I’d have 1 over the Not95 or the Not73 – both phones are as bland as rice cakes and to be honest i think the rice cakes have more character! 5mega pixels or not it just doesnt do it for me – i cant w8 for the k850i – but am in no rush as the phone i have is more then adequate 3.2 mega pixels – who needs a digital camera.

    big up the SE MASSIVE

  60. calum

    u guys clearly dont own a n95 it sucks……..

  61. VorteX

To say that the SE K850i vs N95 is a fairly equal statement, but the N series are completely shoddy. I feel sorry for the people who fall for Nokias N range. For example: I’ve had a N73 for 3 months now, and its case is creaky, once you load it up with more than 500 contacts, the contact list is er.. LAGGY and the reaction after you press a button is shocking – 2 seconds!! The keyboard is extremely bad, the keys not balanced properly, and the tryhard attempt of a joystick has cost nokia lots.
Back to N95: From Cnet (http://reviews.cnet.com/smart-phones/nokia-n95/4505-6452_7-32085029.html)review:
“all of the phone’s features take a toll on the device’s battery and processor, as standby battery life was pretty sad and performance was somewhat sluggish. But do the pros outweigh the cons? Is it worth paying the $750 for the phone? Well, we’re not 100 percent sold. We so desperately wanted to like this phone, but for that money, we want a device that can keep up with our demands and not require us to go running to the outlet to constantly recharge. Plus, we’d also like the see the inclusion of 3G. Still, we know there are the gadget lovers and tech enthusiasts out there that will plunk down the Benjamins for this high-end phone, and we can’t deny that you’ll get your fill of features.”
Personally, i think that the N series are too rushed, and shame on Nokia for bullshitting to the public on this being the future of mobiles.
Sony ericsson has always been the answer to these problems. Granted that they release a few months later than the llatest phone features, but they actually bother to fix and spot errors in their phones. I have had a W810i for 1 year and 1 month now. None of the things that have happend to my N73 happened to my Walkman phone. It is the best phone i have had, and i am not about to swap it for a N95!
The design of Nokia phones are shocking!! So ugly! just the plain silver??
NO NO NO! SE realises these factors of marketing and fixes them with beautiful colours and lighting and the key design is absoloutly beautiful.
And on that subject, i do like their invention of the d-pad being on the letters. At least that is something new, unlike the NOkia series.
Whatever you would say, i would only trust SE with phones. THeir walkman and cybershot features are real brands from other products and sony has so much experience in making these things!
Anyway, some people are complaining about the crap images, so check these pics out! beautiful work by sony ericsson!

  62. james911

I’ve had nokias and se , and the se is the best I’ve currently got a k800i and the only thing that bugs me a bit is the joy stick so I’m glad to see it’s gone on the k850i. I’ll definately be getting a k850i asap.

  63. minimoke

If you bunch of goons were to look on the sony ericsson site, you would see that the k850i looks amazing. I cant see the zenon flash on the nokia, and the camera on the sony is cybershot, which says it all. Sony make the best camera’s in the world, and they’re not going to bodge up they’re latest camera phone now are they? Nokia beat Sony? Ha….

  64. AK

    NOKIA RULES!!!

  65. madspark

have had various nokias and se,s got 4 phones at moment me, wife and kids kids both got nokias me and wife got se,s me k800i wife w800i looking for new phone maybe the se850i as workmates got n95 constantly crashing and unbelievably short battery life both kids nokia phones reg replaced under waranty as screens constantly going faulty used to swear by nokia after the 6110 but now i wouls say sony erricson only fault with k800i tempramental joystick

  66. ben dover

    SE’s RULE!!
    NOKIAS SUCK!!

  67. james

awful?? u crazy.. these are crap pics, check out the websit…

  68. SImon Halabi

Ok if this phone is anything like other SE phones then I expect it will do that which Nokia seem unable to do..and that is..to produce a phone that feels well put together…does not crash…has excellent music play back and picture taking…in addition to a whole series of truely useful functions that Sony have spent time making sure actually function properly.

If those idiots that are too closed minded to look up to realise things have changed in the last 8 years…Nokia once upon a time was head and shoulders about the rest..NOT anymore..admitedly it will take some time to reverse the pre programmed expected way of doing things by Nokia..but once you come through.you’ll be happy you did..

I had a Nokia N95 for 2 weeks after waiting for 3 months..the list on paper suggested this was the Nokia to bring things back in their favour..in reality..it performed misreably..it is..a gimmick…I’m glad this is not what computers have become..it constantly crashed…started to feel really flimsy..with the 2 way slidier gimmick starting to rattle, and case creak (scary on an 18 month contract) the headset jack was in a pathetic position..making it difficult to slide in an out of the pocket..the battery life the worst I have ever seen on a phone…24 hours without making any calls or text (gps wifi bluetooth scans off) the GPS apparently was powered down apparently to conserve battery ..result is that it can take up to 10 minutes to get a lock on…if at all..during which time you can actually see the battery life trickle down..

On paper the N95 is an amazing phone..and anyone that uses it for a short while may actually still think so..try one out for a week or more and then you realise..Nokia have stuffed in lots of features..but delivered one ach one very badly…on a plus note..it has a nice screen…has some nice graphics…and looks really nice when browsing the net…..I sold mine after 2 weeks…the constant crashing, dysfunctional menu key, dreadfull battery life..poor poor GPS receiver, cheap build quality made it a no brainer..thank god my I sent it back for a replacement within the 14 days..I sold it right away..gave nokia another chance in the form of the E65..much much better but I sold that too and went back to SE….am so happy did…K810i all the way..and soon K850i….incidently..I use to have the W800i and that was the best phone I had ever had..

i have to be fair to nokia they used to be good, but as one person has already pointed out there Nrainge is total pap! yup i should know i have had them all and it was SE that saved my faith in mobile phones, not only did the battery actulay last more than a few hrs but it took great pics as well(well for a phone anyhow). it actualy worked without haveing to reboot the phone every 10 mins or so!!!! Nokias phones would be the best there is if they actualy took the time to work out all the bugs and made them work! as for me i think the new k850 will look fab when its launched, as most of the “early pics” of new phones dont ever look like the finished product. i want one NOW!

I think the phone is great. take a look at SE website. Everyone knows SE camera is far better than nokia’s. I think this phone is actually better than the N95. The sliding mechanism is aweful in the N95. GPS is too slow and the battery life is also aweful. The SE850i is better than the N95.

The live pictures of the phone are looking a bit awful coz of the hand-marks on them. Check out the official pictures

And I am sure u wil fall in love wit it..

  72. Edd

this is a dodgey pic from a dodgey site (not this one).

the phone will look ike the most recent Sony Ericsson phones. i somehow think the makers will know a phone that looks like that wont sell!!!

  73. Loz

I reckon it will end up looking nothing like that…

And anything can rival the N95. Its shocking, poor battery life, slow mapping on the GPS (IF you can get it to work), poor WIFI connection (Again if you can get it to work).

Once again Nokia has rushed out the handset and now its having more “teething” problems than a nursery full of toddlers.

Stuff the n95 its crap just like the rest of the N seris phones. the new 850i will look awsom when its ready. Remember the photo is only a rough looking sneak off whats to come. The m610 looks great , the first sneak pic of that was crap too.

i like the SE coz i have k700i but im expecting more stylish than this k850i compare to k700i the trueth is its looks sucks !!! i rather buy a digital cam and a cell than this!!

  76. fedric

i think the both phone are of good quality i prefare the nokia n95 i will love to buy it for my sweetie.

  77. Ben

the back doesnt look to bad but the front looks aweful with the merging d – pad and square buttons. but 1 thingin its favour is that it isnt as chunky as the K800i. But it looks rubbish compared to the K750i and K800i, which are both great phones

  78. nick

I think that the m610i concept above looks pretty good, actually. Dark, and serious and powerful. If it’s got wifi and a decent browser – and a 3.2 camera I’ll be first inline.

  79. trilby

Challenge to the N95? Where’s the GPS then?

  80. pseudofinn

That’s what you call a challenge to the N95? Bah…

And what market is Ericsson leading anyway?

  81. oge

I do agree with bob. The phone looks awful. I would not give this phone to my enemy

  82. bob

The k850i looks terrible, i mean what kind of d-pad is that you’d end up hitting the numbers everytime you use it. and the m600i looks like another flop. When did SE go wrong……..when they started adding “i” to the end of every Phone they pump out just to jazz them up a little more! I used to like SE phones but they just arnt up to par anymore…
