Tickle: super-fast laptop internet connections!

Published August 10, 2007 by Dialaphone in Uncategorized

Jon Tickle, presents the first of the new downloadable video series. In this episode (or programme) Jon looks at how the “Web & Walk” tariff from t-mobile can be used to give laptop users a connection to the internet that is up to ten times faster than 3G allows.

I use a laptop a lot for work, and certainly like to use it when traveling or away from my usual internet connection, so this is fantastic to know about. Thanks Jon! I’d seen that certain phones now offered the enhanced speeds, but not paid much attention because surfing on the tiny screen of a mobile just sucks. I’d just thought it was useful for downloading tunes or games faster. Using these new super-fast connections of some mobiles to super-charge my laptop connection is just brilliant.

The Phones that Jon Tickle mentions
are here, along with the Web & Walk contracts for those who couldn’t keep up on the video:

Nokia N95

Nokia 6120

Nokia E65

Samsung U600 Samsung F500Motorola Razr 2T-Mobile Web’n'Walk Plus

T-Mobile Web’n'Walk Max

And here’s a transcript of the video:

Hi, this is Jon Tickle for the Dial-a-Phone Blog.

Now believe it or not I do actually have a real job aside from appearing on big brother and doing cameos on wacky science programmes! I have a laptop, I do a bit of travelling and I like to be able to hook up to the internet when I’m on the move.

I’d never thought of using my mobile phone to do this before, but you can, and I’m going to show you how!

T-Mobile have launched two new tariffs called Web’n'Walk Plus and Web’n'Walk Max that include all the minutes and texts on a basic Flext 35 tariff, up to 900 minutes or 1800 texs a month, but also include up to 10GB per month of downloadable internet content.

Now you can use the phone itself to access the internet, which is fine, but there are lots of phones that let you do this. The interesting thing about this tariff is that you can actually use your phone as a portable modem which plugs into your laptop and connects you to the internet.

Up until now the data transfer speeds of mobile phones would have meant that the connection would be very slow, even on 3G phones, but a new generation of phones has arrived that supports far higher rates of data transfer, HSDPA enabled phones.

HSDPA stands for High Speed Downlink Packet Access, and is a superfast 3G connection that allows for data transfer speeds of 3.6 Mbits/second, and this will over time be increased to up to over 14 Mbits/second.

Compare that with the data transfer speed of a 3G phone – up to 384 kbps and you can see the difference!

The Nokia N95 is one example of an HSDPA enabled phone, but others are arriving all the time.

Nokia also offer the 6120 and the E65, Samsung have the U700 and the F500, there is an HSDPA version of the LG Shine, and the latest incarnation of the Motorola Razr, the Razr2 is HSDPA enabled.

Simply connect the phone to your laptop using the data lead that comes with the phone and you can have broadband speed internet connection using your mobile phone. Easy!

Lo! The Tickle-ites had their first gospel delivered unto them from he who walks with the Gods, the smooth-browed messiah.

Verily. The Tickle sayeth unto us, “take thy mobile communications devices, and roam”, and we were safe in the knowledge that The Tickle hath provided for us, with his munificent bounty.

“Yield unto me” quoth he. “Raise no false networks before me. For I am the mother and the father. The alpha and the omega. Bleesséd are those that suckle at the teat of my wireless fecundity. Their steadfastness shall be rewarded in the kingdom of Tickle. Everlasting paradise shall be theirs. They shalt not suffer the disconnections, but shall surf in Nirvana everafter”

    And it was good.

I have just purchased a nokia n95 to use as my modem, the speeds i am getting is around 4kB per second, which is probably the equivalent of the old dial up speeds. I have set the phone to receive high speed packet data but it doesn’t make any difference, so i would appreciate any comments about this. Meanwhile I just have to go and make a cup of tea every time I want to access an internet page!
