Levi’s Strauss are launched their own mobile phone in the UK next month. The phone has been designed by the wacky Parisian based design agency Modelabs who were also responsible for Tag Heuer phone design, and a range of odd eco friendly phones. The Levi’s phone looks suspiciously like the Samsung P300 which was released about a year ago, see below:

Clearly the phone is being positioned as a fashion phone because the spec leaves a lot to be desired, it only has a 2 megapixel camera and 40MB of onboard memory. The handset will be finished in stainless steel, and the company says that this can be personalised with a range of denim material cases. The case will be riveted stainless steel, and supplied with a chain to tag it to your jeans (big deal). Feminine “shiny silver” and “shiny sand” editions, featuring a ‘mirror’ screen have also been created, although it’s not clear if these will be released.

As I have said before for a designer phone to succeed it needs to be a good phone in its own right, e.g. Prada phone by LG, and not just an existing phone with a logo stuck on, e.g. the D&G Motorola V3. The Levi’s phone seems to sit somewhere in between. It isn’t an existing phone with a logo stuck but Modelabs have only designed an “average” phone, which does appear to be special in anyway, the looks are average and the spec is certainly average. It’s also debatable whether the Levi’s brand is desirable anymore.
The Prada phone was pretty successful but that has a much more desirable brand and the phone itself had an innovative design and user interface. So I doubt whether the Levi’s phone will be flying off the shelves, especially when you consider the likes of the Samsung G600 (5 mega pixel slider) is launching today and the launch of the iPhone is just around the corner.

Can someone tell me what sort of batery this phone can take? With what other lg phone is compatible?
I understand wifi and everything, but there is one thing I don’t get. How come apple made the iphone music store that you have to be on wifi to access it? I know that edge access would be slower, but that can’t really be an excuse. Edge and wifi use the same internet, so why can’t both access the itunes store?

I new this woman once who always wore levi’s. She would love this phone. My problem is I still love her. She was 50 when i was 15 people said it was weird! Was it?
If it were made of denim would people like it more?
levi cld do better than this.. wats the rush??
If ever I wanted a retro calculator & I couldn’t be bothered to fight crowds or a drunk A winehouse at camden market to find it, this is it. And how CRAP it looks. Hints at SonyE’s P1i for inspirational styling but getting wrong wrong so very very wrong. Assign to bin, do not recyle! Do not release to public!
Absolute crap!
I probably have the tightest levi’s in the world. So tight they look like they are painted on! But I love them! I’m 22 now had them since 11, thats good going. The colour has still not faded. I call them my special occassions pants! Anyhow enough ciaran of your rant and talk about the phone….
Class, style and cool! Nice one by levi’s…. I just hope the phone is as good as my jeans!
I love dial-a-phone!!!!!!!!!!!
The phone actually looks kooooooooool–I’m impressed! I think the customer target market (big words) are young adults.
Teens like gadets and toys. Young adults like looks and function–they’re not going to be fiddling with their phone all day, and something that teenagers may be astonished to believe about the Levis phone is that “young adults may actually use the phone to make a phone call.” I know it’s difficult for you teens who spin your phone around all day and play games on it…or just stare at it like your watching a motion picture, but remember phone…calls…speak. Now grow up kids
calm down Rose. It’s going to be ok.
What does Levi Strauss mean to me? Cowboys – TIGHT – SKIN TIGHT – FITTED JEANS but, fitted to WHAT? YOUR BODY that’s what, and in 2 of the promo pictures there appears a your gal and guy, thin, handsome, hand picked by the advertising agency to HOLD a BRICK…..that’s what this phone is…..just another BRICK IN THE WALL. The young gal and guy in the promo shots are just like you and me – a body, molded from skin and bone, but maybe younger, maybe huskier, maybe prettier, maybe uglier, but ONE THING IS FOR SURE – THEIR BACKSIDES CURVE…..JUST LIKE MINE AND YOURS. Think about it – go on, think about it – a well known manufacturer of clothing, designer clothing, clothing that fits your body like a GLOVE…..now wants in with a mobile device, a phone….and what do we have behind DOOR #1…..a BRICK….you tell me how this BRICK is going to fit your body. Off the top of my head, and with all respect for Levi Strauss, a label that is in my closet, the only place where this BRICK would fit nicely is in my CRACK. YO Levi Srauss, you would have had a better shot at a fashioin statement if you had designed the PHONE to look like a BELT BUCKLE. You can see what is happeninig with cell phones and mobile devices, can’t you see it? It’s the same ordinary device with a new label – that’s all – like switching heads in a funeral director’s office. “He doesn’t look that good, I don’t want to bury him that way, please do something with his body.” “OKAY Mam, how’s about we just put his head on that body, would that suit you.” “Oh….let’s see….go ahead, try it….yeah, that’s better!” Come on SONY…..COME ON SONY……I’m waiting for “SANDY.” Who is “SANDY?” Search GOOGLE for “SANDY” – they know exactly what you’ve been looking for in a PERFECT user friendly mobile device………GO ON……search for “SANDY” the mobile telephone of the FUTURE, due to arrive within 2 years or less. I KID YOU NOT! Have a nice day!
