Nintendo DS Lite Mobile Phone – Concept

ds lite concept phone - internet and mp3

Here are the first pictures of a DS Lite as concept mobile phone / the perfect combined mobile phone, MP3 player, internet device, mobile office!

Mobile phones are no longer just mobile phones, most offer internet access, office applications, gaming, live TV, mega-pixel cameras, radios and MP3 players. But quite often I find the experience of using these more advanced features disappointing because manufactures try to cramp all these features into a “mobile phone”. What is required is a purpose built device, which includes:

  • Large screen for internet browsing (800×600 min)
  • 3G+
  • Full Qwerty keyboard
  • MP3 player
  • Office software – word, excel, powerpoint, outlook
  • 5+ mega-pixel camera
  • Robust casing
  • Touch screen

Take the long awaited Nokia N95, certainly an excellent phone, with some great features but fundamentally the form-factor (candy bar) hasn’t change from phones designed 5 years ago. The screen is too small for easy web browsing and it doesn’t have a qwerty keyboard.

What about the iPhone I hear you say, well its certainly a move in the right direction. Even Nokia agreed because they have already announced they are planning to copy it. I recently got my hands on an iPhone and I love it, it’s so easy to use! It looks great and has just about enough memory for all my music and best of all it’s a delight to use. So far I’ve only needed a fleeting glance at the instructions. Having said that, the iPhone is but no means perfect.

As I see the main problems iPhone are:

  • It’s only got a 2 mega pixel camera,
  • The internet connection speed is appallingly slow,
  • The screen resolution is simply too small to browse the internet with pleasure,
  • No FM radio
  • Qwerty keyboard is too small
  • Screen not within case, more likely to get damaged

So this got my thinking what would make the perfect “multi-media device”. Well I personally think that a modified DS Lite would be pretty close to perfect. Obviously it’s a great games device, and it’s in a robust case that will protect those precious screens. A phone, camera, and mp3 player could be easily added. Best of all the dual screens would be very useful indeed, and will allow for true multi-tasking. Just think about it, you could use one screen as a touch screen qwerty keyword while the top screen displays outlook, excel etc. Or you could browse the internet, while watching TV in the other screen. Alternatively you would be organising your mp3s while watching TV or browsing the internet.

PEOPLE! They didn’t just take a DS and put all of this into it. They must have did alot of re-programing or just took a normal DS and print off pictures and put them on the screens and make it look like there is a camera in it. ITS PROBABLY FAKE!!

Its totally retarded. I would like a DS to be like that, but a phone, NO!!!
It would be WAYYYY too big and bulky. Sorry, i dont like it at all, good idea for a ds, but not for a phone.

some of you people are so dumb. you just take a quick look at the pictures and start going “omg, i want one”, “wow, how’d you get a camera in it”, “hey, my DS doesn’t have the internet what’s wrong and how do i make it work?”. bunch of ‘tards, seriously. next time try to read at least a handful of the words in the article and not just look at the “pwitty pickchas”. OUT

it’s cool, but pointless… I’m sure one of you has some spare time. get of YOUR ass and do some research on programming, re-programming, hardware manipulation, etc. and create this damn thing!

Oh, and another thing, the DS’s Processing power isn’t anywere near powerful enough to run two programmes at once; it is a terrible multitasker. The amound of proccessing power required to use excel and watch TV at the same time is to much for the DS’s little porccessor. Unless you want to buy a DS, take out all the insides, build all the componants from scratch and put it all together, this idea isn’t lookig to feasable. On the other hand, I have known people to do these sorts of things, so we could be seeing one of these on youtube pretty soon!

Well, the added features could be accomplished using a Slot 1 flash card, homebrew software and a slot 2 device acting as all the extra gadgets (Mobile phone, GPS, memory expansion, rumble) but you would have to actualy make the slot 2 GBA card fit it all in, or have some external dongle hanging out. The screen, however, would have to be the same resolution, have the same power drain, and fit in the DS for the DS to be compatible. The Mobile phone and TV functions would also need external power. If anyone has a degree in engineering, programming, IT and has enough spare time to make it, I’d sure love to see this project go ahead.

Please pay attention to the full article above and the comments people have left. The internet browser has already been released, the DS phone is but a twinkle in a developer’s eye and if anyone is planning on bringing out PDS functionality for the DS, I don’t know about it, but want it.

Perhaps first Nintendo should get off their lazy, self-congratulatory a$$es post-Wii and give us a cartdridge for the GBA slot containing 1GB of flash memory and a decent music player (the existing one is appalling) with video support, and PDA functions such as calendar/diary, address book, calculator, spreadsheet and word processing……

And if you don’t think that is what the DS is for, you don’t have to buy it.

As far as I am concered, this would be the perfect carry-on multi-media device. Work, play and functionality all in one user friendly device.

There’s already a program out there that does half of this. The Keyboard, Music, and Internet part. No phone, TV, or Videochat yet. But it does have an advanced calculator, a drawing program, and a sound recorder!

cut out the gaming buttons, GBA and DS slots and gaming chips, andf you could have a much smaller, sleeker and focussed device. basically, learn from ngage. a jack of all trades be the master of none ting.
