Samsung have announced the F490 fully touchscreen handset due for release in early 2008. It’s a slimline phone with a silver exterior and a 3.2″ touch sensitive TFT display, that more than resembles the recently released F700.

It has a 5 megapixel camera, like the F700, and the screen features haptic-touch feedback. The phone has 3G and HSDPA connectivity and there are three touch senstive buttons under the main display.
No more details at the moment, but the release is scheduled for Q1/Q2 2008 so more should follow soon.

michael, just read your comment and i have heard that the f490 has an auto locking feature as its a touch screen. every time you want to use the phone you need to unlock the touch screen first, even to answer a call. im still liking the f490 and looking to get one in the next few days providing the locking feature isnt to much of a pain in the arse
after reading you comments, have now decided to leave the F490 well alone.
Got my new F490 yesterday , had to send it back as it was turning itself off after 20 seconds or so if it wasn’t in use . It stays on if I’m messing with it for any length of time so it doesn’t look like a battery problem – and it’s showing as fully charged.
Vodafone tech assistants were no help , replacement arrived this morning and is doing exactly the same thing , making me think it’s not a fault but something I’m not doing properly…they can’t all be faulty can they?
Any useful comment appreciated thanks

Ordered through Vodafone business, phone is arriving tomorrow.
Ordered the phone as an upgrade. Vodafone promised it on Friday, March 28, but when I contacted them said they had none in stock. They promised to call me the following week. No further info given.
Further to my comment above at 3:41pm the F490 is infact NOT a slide phone and has an on screen touch qwerty kepboard, not a slide out keyboard. Sorry for the confusion in my last comment.
Hey guys, have spoken to vodafone today and this phone is due for release on Friday 28 March subject to final checks at the beginning of next week. I’m told the F490 doesnt have a qwerty keyboard and is a slide phone like the U600 etc. This is likely to be Samsungs rival to the iPhone and looks and sounds very promising. This phone will also replace the Samsung G800 which Vodafone are discontinuing their association with.
hiya everyone does anyone happen to know if the samsung F490 has a qwerty keyboard? if not could anyone tell me if they know of a phone with a keyboard (except the samsung F700) i would really appreciate any help xxx
I called Vodafone as they missed the march release date. They say there are problems with the camera as its taking over 3 seconds to open / take a picture therefore they have pushed it back until the end of march, maybe even april.
You can get it sim free from the 17th from play.com, although I imagine it will be a lot cheaper from vodafone
vodaphone said its not 8 march its know the 28 march, wish they make their minds up
tell me how much it is an when it is available please
Update – Vodafone has confirmed new launch date as 8 March.
Just spoken to Vodafone. Despite their customer services team telling me last week that the phone will be launched on 23 Feb, they do not have stocks of the F490 and they “apparently” will not have stock for at least a couple of months!
Ew. I’m hoping, praying infact, that this phone is not only for Vodafone.
As i dislike Vodafone immensely, and would l ike to upgrade to this phone, while staying with Orange.
I would even consider buying this phone if O2 got it, as O2 has a fantastic signal in my area of the UK.
Vodafone, however, is a no-go.
This phone is an iphone killer just like the f700 but better cuz its got a 5 megapixel camera. Well sorry to disappoint cuz its got no gps and no wifi support!!! It will be available in the UK on vodafone on the 23rd of February. One great phone for the ones who see greatness!!!
WHen will this phone be out on the UK market? which networks will it be on? these are questions we need know!! this is a great phone and i want it now….far better than the iPhone
This phone looks like the LG Prada, but better looking, i wonder what the FULL specs are. Hope it has Gps and 3rd party apps.
I think this is one pnone to look out for its going to be a hit.
