With Toshiba and Samsung showing their hand in the business mobile market recently it’s no surprise to see something new from BlackBerry. The original BlackBerry Pearl 8100, released back in September 2006, proved extremely popular, so rather than doing anything particularly radical with the design it’s just been tweaked and upgraded over the years as and when new technologies arrive.

The 8120 and 8130 were two such variants and now we see the arrival of the 8110, based largely on the Pearl 8120. Rather than a straight upgrade, it’s more of an alternative specification based on your needs, substituting the WiFi connectivity for a built-in GPS receiver and mapping application. You’ll still find the same 240×260 pixel display, 2MP digital camera and quad-band GSM with GPRS and EDGE for data. There’s also Bluetooth and a multimedia player with micro-SD expandable memory, and of course you’ll find the QWERTY keypad and trackball control synonymous with the Pearl series. It’s a shame that WiFi was sacrificed for the navigational capabilities but it does offer a good choice for business users so we expect this revised model to mirror the recent success of the rest of the series.
The 8110 is available around Europe at the time of writing and will be supplied by O2 and Vodafone in the UK.
