We all know that mobile phones are bad for the environment. And we all know that we should be doing our part to be eco-friendly and save the earth. But the reality of human nature is that most of us are pretty darn lazy, even when it comes to the actions that we think are important. As a result, the majority of people are more likely than not to keep doing damage to the earth with their mobile phone use because it’s easier to do than not to do. You would most likely be inclined to go green with your mobile phone if it was just a little bit easier to do than it seems to be.

If you want to build up your green points and reduce your mobile phone eco-harm without putting in a lot of effort, take the following easy steps. They won’t take too much effort on your part and you can feel better about yourself when you go to sleep at night.

Buy a green mobile phone
The simplest thing that you can do to go green is to get one of the new eco-friendly phones that are starting to hit the market. There aren’t many of them yet (Nokia’s Remade is a popular one that’s new to the market) but it’s an area of increasing interest to mobile phone developers so we’re going to see more in the near future. By making the choice to purchase this technology, you don’t actually have to do a whole lot else to be green with your phone. Let’s face it; many of us would rather invest money than time when it comes to going green. We want to spend the very little time it takes to go buy the new phone and then be able to forget about it.

Use green mobile phone technology
So you’re not yet ready to buy a green mobile phone. That’s okay. We understand that the limited choices available in the market today make it hard to love the green phone just yet. But that doesn’t mean that you can’t put your money where your eco-heart is. Use green mobile phone technology like solar-powered phone chargers to boost your green level without changing much of what you do with your phone habits. After all, you have to charge your phone anyway so it’s not going to be too big of a hindrance to use a charger that is powered by the sun. Again, it’s a case of buying the product and letting it do the eco-work for you.
Do nothing
The only thing that is easier than going out and buying green technology is doing absolutely nothing at all. In this case, that means that you don’t go out and buy the latest new phone on the market. Mobile phone technology changes so rapidly that we’re always wanting the hottest new item. New phones are great but they also cause a whole lot of waste because it means that we’re tossing our old phones out before their life cycle is really over. You don’t have to jump on the bandwagon of every new phone that catches your eye. Instead, do nothing and be all the greener because of it.
Drop old phones in the mail
One of the reasons that the lazy person really hates trying to be green with his mobile phone is because it’s not an item that has typically been easy to recycle. E-waste recycling is frequently considered to be more of an annoyance that it’s worth. That’s because in many places, there are only one or two locations where you can recycle these items. And even worse, a lot of places will actually charge you money to recycle your phone. That practice is changing and more and more mobile phone recycling drops are opening up.
However, the lazy man doesn’t want to trek all the way to a recycling place to be a green mobile phone user. Until recycling comes to your doorstep, a better bet is to donate your old mobile phone technology. There are many different places that you can do this (such as Collective Good in the U.S. or Oxfam in the UK). Find one that will let you simply drop that old mobile phone in the mail so that it can be put to good use. You’re not so lazy that you can’t go to the post office, are you?
Talk green
The main thing that you’re going to do on your mobile phone, whether you’re green with the phone or you’re not, is that you’re going to talk. Why not make it a point to include a little bit of green talk in your conversations? Ideally, you would have some knowledge of the latest green news, particularly as it applies to mobile phones, but that’s not really necessary. Anything that you want to talk about that has something to do with being green can help to reduce the eco-harm that’s happening around the world.
There is truth in the statement that knowledge is power. And spreading that knowledge is something that can be really motivating, both to yourself and to others. By including green topics in all of your conversations, you keep green issues at the forefront of people’s minds. Surely, somewhere in between catching up about your day and gossiping about the latest celebrity activities, you can find something green to talk about. And it’s not going to take a whole lot of your energy since you’re already talking away anyway!

Be aware of green mobile technology
The main thing to realize is that it really doesn’t take a lot of effort to be someone who is green in his mobile phone use. It can seem like it at first, since mobile phone recycling isn’t easy in some areas and green mobile phones can be hard to get your hands on, but the reality is that it’s increasingly easy to go green with this kind of technology. As more and more people start taking an interest in this area of eco-kindness, it’s only going to get easier to go green. And you’ll have already started racking up those green points without exerting a whole lot of effort at all!

I think more manufacturers should follow in Nokias footsteps. As more companies follow this lead the use of recycled materials in mobile phones will become more the ‘norm’ than the exception to the rule. There are loads of companies collecting old mobiles now that can be recycled for further use, which can be used to our own benefit such as http://www.recyclerfone.co.uk
In the UK you can go to greenmobile.co.uk – nuff said.
Honsetly, everytime you talk to someone you have to tell them some random green fact or “help their lives”, most people are going to get pissed and probably stop talking on the phone to you.
