TAG Heuer Finally Release Details Of Glam-Phone

Dedicated Dialaphone blog attendees may well remember our early take on Tag Heuer joining the likes of Prada and D&G in releasing their own branded mobile phone. We were looking at a couple of mocked up watch designs at the time, but have recently heard they’re now getting involved with a conventionally designed handset, and have to admit it looks fantastic.

We’re not always keen on the often overly-extravagant designs of fashion and luxury phones, but the crocodile skin leather and metal design of Tag’s little number bowled us over. Launched with the help of Modelabs, who helped Levi bring their recently reported Red Tab phone to the market, the Tag branded ‘Meridiist’ will set you back quite a bit more, and is reportedly being priced at between 3,400 and 3,900 euros (which if you’re interested, works out at about £3000). The price is variable because the handset is allegedly customisable, though the sorts of features you can expect to tweak are likely to me more cosmetic than anything else.

In terms of hard specs, you’ll find a two megapixel digital camera built-in, Bluetooth, a 1.9” QVGA display that’s precision crafted from sapphire crystal display glass (don’t drop it) and an OLED 96×76 pixel secondary display for video calling. It’s hardly going to take on devices like the Nokia N95 in terms of features and versatility then, but if you’re looking for a wow factor with a mobile phone we think you’ll be pretty hard pressed to find one bigger than this.

I used this phone about two months ago (working prototype), it’s quite heavy but feels very solid and looks great. Feature wise it’s nothing special except for the battery life.

I couldn’t disagree more – it looks hideous and about 5 years out of date. You call it luxury, I call it tack. The Prada and D&G phones at least had a bit of subtlety about them.

They’ve got an SLR watch model which goes for this metal-and-crocodile-skin-leather effect, and it actually looks alright, but this certainly doesn’t. I really don’t like this at all, and the features ain’t exactly inspiring, as you rightly say.
