Published June 20, 2008 by Andrew Boxall in News

The dust has settled and while many wait for July 11th (with that statement we declare this news roundup to be an iPhone-free-zone) everyone else gets on with life.  Official announcements of previously leaked handsets, underwater telephony and a sneak peak at Android await below…

1. Visual Voicemail.

We kick off with some interesting news from the USA, where mobile carrier Verizon is set to offer a visual voicemail  service for $1.99 per month to its subscribers.  The subject of a recent lawsuit, the technology allows users to do exactly what it says; leave video messages instead of simply voice ones when the recipient is unavailable.  We wonder how far away a European announcement can be?

2. Sony Ericsson Get Official

Following a flurry of leaked pictures recently, Sony Ericsson has made several of the models official This week.  Most notably, the list includes the 8.1 megapixel camera phone the C905, the S302 Snapshot and the interesting motion-sensitive gaming handset, the F305.

3. The Nemo Phone

Watches which are waterproof we can understand and waterproof mobile phone make sense too; but mobiles which are designed to be actually used underwater?  Here we struggle to see the practical usage, especially when the built-in TV tuner works at a depth of six meters too!  So, if you go for a dive and suddenly slap your head when you remember EastEnders, this is clearly the product for you!

4. It’s the Batphone!

Recently we saw the promotional Ironman phone to tie in with the recent Robert Downey Jr. movie of the same name and now, in readiness for the summer’s biggest blockbuster, we have the Dark Knight phone This US spec Nokia 6205 comes with a Dark Knight themed case and various wallpapers and videos related to the new film.

5. Digital Boarding Passes on your Phone

Currently on trial by Delta Airlines in the USA, passengers are able to download a digital boarding pass on to their mobile phone by visiting Delta’s website.  This pass is then scanned to confirm before boarding and that’s it!  Without thinking of the financial and convenience benefits, this makes sense as a ‘green’ initiative too.  Expect Europe’s low-cost airlines to be watching closely.

6. LG’s Designers Day Off

If you’re wanting a great looking phone, LG rarely disappoint; but for every Viewty we suppose there has to be a KS360, a phone that for once, we will be glad if it never makes an appearance over here.

7. Android Video

Engadget has found some interesting videos which claim to show Google’s Android software at work on a Nokia N95.  Provided you ignore the dire picture and music, it’s quite an interesting watch.

8. Nokia Tube Out Soon

We recently found the Nokia Tube had been renamed as the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic and now it has turned up on a German poster featuring several other already announced/available handsets.  No price is mentioned, but it does say the Tube has WiFi and HSDPA, but this must indicate an official release is imminent.

More information on the forthcoming Motorola ZN5 phone was leaked this week and shortly after, someone sent GSMarena.com some sample pictures taken with the Kodak-branded camera.  Though not as sharp as we were hoping, the article does state they were taken with a pre-production handset, so our hopes are still high for this one!

That wraps up our collection of ten of the best mobile news stories of the last seven days, until the same time next week!
