The iPhone 3G is launching here in the UK on July 11th at 7am. This seems like quite a strange tactic since the last iPhone launch was such a flop – we posted images showing deserted Carphone Warehouse, O2 and Apple stores which were in start contrast to the hype being reported in the newspapers.
When the first iPhone launched in the UK it went on sale at 6pm, just as most people were on their way home from work. This meant that people could quite easily finish work and start queuing up for their new phone.
If people didn’t bother to queue up after work for the first iPhone will we see big queues at 7am for the 3G version? O2 seems to think so and has even issued a statement warning customers that they can only buy one iPhone each:
“Orders will be placed on a first come first served basis. We will be writing to you again before the 11th with details about how you can place your order.”

yust joking
SON OF A BITCH THEY SEED THAT IT VIL COST 199 dollars YEAH
The difference is that this time round it’s a much better phone for the UK market:
It’s got a lower up-front price, which we’re used to.
It’s got 3G.
It’s got real downloadable rather than web apps to customise it.
It’s got 3G.
However, existing iPhone customers won’t be queueing at shops. O2 is dealing with upgrades online only. I think lots of people are going to want one, but they’ve got to get out of current contracts first.. or will wait for the PAYG version.
