Top Ten Mobile Phone News Stories of the Week – 22nd August

Published August 22, 2008 by Andrew Boxall in News

Another week goes by in mobile phone world and still the summer holiday effect is in full swing.  This doesn’t mean nothing at all happens though, so here are the top ten news stories of the week:

1. Nokia Tube Out Before 2009!

We’ve been lucky enough to know almost all there is to know about this little handset before it’s been officially announced, something which according to Nokia, will be anytime soon if they plan to release it before the year is out.

2. All-In-One Concept Phone.

The Ply, a name inspired by the multi-layer wood, is a Japanese concept phone designed by Hideo Kanbara and incorporates a mini projector, photo printer and a proper, usable game control pad, all inside a stacked section design.  Looks super-cool to us!

3. S40 Software At Risk Admits Nokia.

When Nokia refused to pay Adam Gowdiak his 20,000 euro in return for details on a security flaw he’d found in their popular S40 operating system software, the word dismissed his claims as more financial fancy.  However, Nokia have now said the risk is there and are working on a fix.  Did Adam get paid?  Did Nokia already know?

4. New Arte Series Designer Phone From Nokia.

Following on from the Arte and Arte Sapphire, the Carbon Arte is the latest in beautifully designed and manufactured handsets from Nokia.  This time using carbon fibre and titanium in its construction, the Carbon Arte is a joy to behold…at a price.

5. LG Prada II, First Pictures?

It was inevitable it would be made, but just how long would we have to wait?  We’re talking about the Prada II of course, the follow up to the disappointing but popular LG Prada and it looks like Boy Genius has go a sneak preview of it!  If the picture is real,it may not be long before LG shouts about it from the rooftops.

6. Disappointed with your iPhone 3G?  Sue Apple!

The iPhone 3G has had reported reception problems since launch and Jessica Smith from Birmingham, Alabama has had enough, she and her lawyers have filed a class-action suit against Apple for selling a defective product and benefitting financially from it.  Seeking $5million total damages, she would also like a new iPhone 3G.  Any bets on the outcome…

7. Sony Ericsson PlayNow relaunched.

This one crept up with very little fanfare, which is a shame as its got quite a lot going for it. PlayNow is Sony Ericsson’s media download service gets a facelift and goes officially live on the 25th August, offering 1 million downloads, increasing to 5 million over time, at prices similar to iTunes.  Best of all, these songs will be DRM free!

8. Get Paid to Stand About!

Orange in Poland are employing actors to hang about outside their stores just before the launch of the iPhone 3G.  Presumably the thinking behind this is either to create ‘buzz’ or that everyone who sees a queue automatically must join it, regardless of its purpose.  Does it work?  No, it just makes Orange look desperate.

9. Smart Kids Need Smart Phones.

But not just any phone, they need the SmartBerry!  Presumably just a phone call from a lawsuit, this Bandai created messaging device keeps your kids in touch with other kids and has the one thing every pre-schooler needs – a business card reader!

10. New Vodafone Relationship Counseling Service.

Bless Vodafone, they care about you!  According to the mobile service provider, this Bank Holiday will see 75% of those on a journey argue with our significant others over which is the best way to the beach.  So what does Dear Vodafone suggest?  Their Find&Go location service of course…
