With 60 million downloads from the iPhone App Store Apple still doesn’t seem to have been able to offer what people will call the “killer app” that takes the iPhone mainstream. Once the killer app is found it will probably be re-produced across platforms such as Google Android allowing non-iPhone owners to experience the same things on other smartphones.
Recently we downloaded Vicinity and after a couple of days I’m convinced that this might actually be the mobile phone industries killer application.
The concept of Vicinity is quite simple – it uses your current location via the GPS chip and finds lists of everything close by. Vicinity can find pubs, bars, shops, towns, supermarkets and even photos via Flickr and Panoramio.

Exact latitude and longitude are displayed.

Panoramio has a huge number of geo-tagged photos and is the main photo provider providing content for the standard web version of Google Maps.

Of course the first thing most people will want to use this phone for is to find the nearest pubs.

Vicinity lets you drill down to the address and click through to Yahoo Local or Google Maps for more information.

Panoramio lets you zoom in on photos and visit the site for larger versions.

Photos are also pulled in via Flickr.

Wikipedia has a huge amount of information on local towns.

Bank information is accurate and useful.

Hotel information gives a clickable phone number to call the hotel right away.

Lists of nearby places are extremely accurate and include links to maps.

Hotel information is pretty much perfect with clickable phone numbers to call.
