Even though the economy is causing some people concerns, there are still hundreds of startup companies launching in the technology sector. Many of these startups will fail and many more will be mediocre but some of these startups are going to come out with products and services that people like enough to make them mainstream in the months and years to come. It’s difficult to say which startups will become these rare gems and which will fizzle out along with the majority of them. The best that we can do as consumers is to find the startups that we think are the best and then to support them so that interest in them can grow.
For those people who are interested in following startups that are in the business of doing something related to mobile phones, these are one dozen good ones in the new market that you might want to consider keeping an eye on:
1. Beema.
This is a startup that has created an avatar-design system for the mobile phone. It is currently in beta but has received rave reviews from those avatar-loving folks who have signed up to try it out. You do have to use a PC to set up a basic account but after that you’re able to rely solely on the mobile phone for designing your animated avatar. Anyone who uses avatars for gaming or social networking will find this to be a fun startup to watch.

2. Cascada Mobile Breeze.
With the launch of the Google Android platform and other developments in mobile phone technology, we’re seeing the start of a trend towards a new generation of mobile phones that
emphasize the ability to use a variety of different applications suited to your specific needs and interests as a cell phone consumer. This startup allows anyone anywhere to design and create mobile phone applications which can then be sent to any handset. It’s a user-friendly product for people who want to create their own mobile phone apps to be shared with others through individual sharing or viral distribution.

3. GoMovies.
You’re out on the town with friends and you’re trying to figure out what you all want to do together. Someone suggests a movie but nobody knows what’s playing where or when. This startup company service allows you to find out that information easily without having to call the theatres near you. Unfortunately, this one is currently designed only for the iPhone but it’s a startup that may be patterned by another company in the future for use on a wider variety of handsets.

4. Hiogi.
This startup site is designed to allow people to ask and answer questions from the mobile phone. It’s similar to sites like Yahoo! answers but is designed for mobile phone users and is designed for more immediate responses and interaction between people on the site. Questions that one might ask here include things like how to get from one highway to another or where there is a good Mexican restaurant in a certain zip code; these are things that people might want to know when they’re out and about, away from the PC but with access to their phones. Questions can be asked via SMS, email, Twitter or mobile browser communication.

5. Mobile-SPS.
This is an interesting company that’s focused on survey-taking and mobile polls. People who are interested in doing surveys for marketing reasons (or any other reason for that matter) can put together the poll questions and then send them to their mobile phone target group. As mobile phone advertising becomes more ubiquitous, startups like these may find themselves doing well in the industry.

6. MobileTraffic.
This startup is unique from a lot of the others that are out there. It collects information from traffic cameras in order to provide you with up-to-date traffic information via your mobile phone. It retrieves information from over six thousand cameras in over ten countries so it’s something that can be used in a lot of places.

7. Morange.
This startup provides software that makes it possible to turn the average handset into a phone that is capable of smartphone functions. It is specifically geared towards the online social networking fan who wants to take their networking mobile but also allows for a range of different smartphone features that would be enjoyed by business professionals and others who regularly use the mobile phone for more than just basic voice conversations.

8. Ontela.
Anyone who uses their mobile phone for taking pictures should pay attention to this startup. The goal of their main product is to make transfer of your camera phone pictures to your online image storage system (such as your Photobucket account) automatic so that you don’t have to actually do anything to save your photos to an accessible website. This company recently received $10 million for expansion of their products.

9. PriceCheck.at.
This is a UK-based startup that is involved in the increasingly popular business of allowing you to do price check comparisons from your mobile phone. When you’re at a store and see something that you like, you enter the information for the product into the mobile phone. A search is completed which will offer you pricing information from competitive stores in the area. In some cases, you can purchase the item directly from the mobile phone via the website which is selling the product at the lowest price.

10. TXT60.com.
This startup provides a simple service that could be of great interest to mobile phone users. It allows you to convert audio and / or video from almost any format into use on your mobile phone.
