Swype Aims to Improve Text Input on Phones

A startup company run by one of the original inventors of the predictive text system that was installed on over 2.5 billion phones is aiming to revolutionise how we input text on touchscreen devices

Cliff Kushler was on the team that invented T9 and his latest invention, Swype, allows even technophiles to enter text at 50 words per minute – around the same as the fastest teenagers type using existing predictive text messaging systems. The application can be installed on existing smartphones, the iPhone and any device with a touch screen.

The image below shows how the system works. You can see the word “quick” being written simply by drawing a line between Q, I, C and K. The computer figures out what word you are trying to type by the path your finger or stylus takes over the screen. Crucially you don’t need to take your finger off the screen and press the letters – just drag it along the surface.
