Published September 26, 2008 by Andrew Boxall in Uncategorized

It’s been Google-mania this week thanks to the unveiling of the Gphone, or G1 as it’s now officially known, by T-Mobile in the USA, plus Sony Ericsson have decided to let Europe Play Now, RyanAir get set for in-flight mobile calls and Nokia gear up for the Tube release.

1. The G1 Android phone is Here!

On the 23rd September, T-Mobile, Google and HTC unveiled the world’s first Android-based mobile phone, named the G1, in New York. Set to be released on the 22nd October this year, the HTC Dream looks better then expected (or are we just getting used to it) and has a decent enough set of features. The UK is expected to get the G1 before Christmas via T-Mobile complete with tariffs offering unlimited browsing. Very exciting indeed!

2. Visa Prepare Android Based Services.

Credit company Visa are busy preparing an application which will allow Android users to monitor their card status in almost real-time. In addition to identifying cash machines with GPS, this could be a considerable advance in security too, as the phone would alert you when a transaction was made – helpful if you didn’t realise your card had been stolen.

3. Sony Ericsson Considers Android.

Just like all major manufacturers will probably be doing, Sony Ericsson are considering using Android on a future mobile phone, but have told Reuters they have no specific plans in place. Significantly, Sony Ericsson are not one of the members of the Open Handset Alliance which promotes open-source operating systems.

4. Lloyds TSB Set to Introduce Mobile Banking.

Visa aren’t the only ones at the cutting edge, as Lloyds TSB in the UK will introduce account management servces via mobile phone next month, including transfers between bank accounts and an alert when customers are close to their balance limit. Although this service will cost, it will be free to students until sometime next year.

5. Ryanair to Introduce In-Flight Calls.

Ryanair have teamed up with OnAir to allow mobile calls to be made from its aircraft. Expected to be officially announced soon and rolled out on a selection of their planes at first, six people at a time can make a call costing around two pounds per minute, or send an unlimited amount of SMS or email messages.

6. Sony Ericsson Announces Play Now Arena Plans for Europe.

PlayNow arena is Sony Ericsson’s music download service which works in conjunction with their Walkman phones and the TrackID feature found across the range. Importantly, the service offers DRM-free music tracks for download and is expected to hit the UK during the fourth quarter this year.

7. Russian Designer’s Mobile Phone Looks Impressive.

Whether you have heard of Russian designer Art Lebedev or not, there is no denying his most famous project, the Optimus Maximus keyboard, is a thing of beauty, so it’s always interesting to see what else he’s up to. His latest is the Scartel mobile phone, designed for the Russian carrier of the same name and looks equally as cool. Let’s hope it’s produced sometime in the future!

8. A Busy Week for Samsung!

Samsung have showed the world their latest collaboration with world famous designer Armani this week, called the Samsung Armani Night Effect. The bright LED’s running down the side of the handset make sure everyone knows the phone is an Armani too! Also spotted were two new music phones, the Beat b and the Beat s.

9. Nokia Tube About to be Announced?

We’ve been waiting for ages and talking endlessly about the Nokia Tube, but if the rumours are true, by the end of next week, the 5300 XpressMusic should be one big step closer to actually being on sale!

10. Huge Mobile Demand Will Force New Innovation in Mobile Market.

An estimated 70% of the world’s people will own a mobile phone by the end of 2011 says Informa Telecoms and Media. Although this could be seen as saturation point, it will also force plenty of new innovations in terms of how and what we use our mobiles for, as the carriers and manufacturers fight for our attention.

With Android out in the wild, those who were waiting to make announcements in ‘clear air’ should be doing so soon. Join us again next week to find out who!
