Top Ten Mobile Phone News Stories of the Week – 2nd January.

Published January 2, 2009 by Andrew Boxall in Uncategorized

Happy New Year!  Welcome to the first weekly roundup of 2009, sharing the top mobile phone stories hitting the news with all our readers.  This week we have a host of international mobile phone releases, many of which we’d love to have here!  Let’s take a look.

1.  Leaked Pictures of Samsung S8300.

The Samsung S8300 is a slider/touchscreen mobile phone rumoured to be released around March, although it’s not known if this will be a European or Asian release.  The big news is the large touchscreen is an OLED item which offers better contrast with less power draw, in addition to this, the S8300 has an 8 megapixel camera, GPS and 3G HSDPA.

2.  New Nokia Arte Series Extravagance.

Nokia have added a new model to their gorgeous Arte range of luxury mobile phones.  Based on the Nokia 8800 Carbon Arte, the new 8800 Gold Arte replaces the carbon finish with 18-carat gold and white leather, but retains the majority of the technical features.  Nokia have yet to tell us the price and date of release, but start saving as we know it will be expensive!

3.  Pocket Gaming Ugliness.

With the many excellent games available for mobile phones, serious gamers may feel the need to add a more ‘console’ like game pad, which is where the BGP100 comes in.  Adaptable for phones up to 55mm wide and powered by a single battery it may not be the best looking mod, but it should make your gaming better!

4.  T-Mobile G2 on the Horizon?

We know it will happen, but will it be so soon?  The follow-up device to the G1 is rumoured to make its debut as soon as January 26th and will feature a 5 megapixel camera, touchscreen and Wi-Fi, but no QWERTY keyboard this time, putting it directly at war with the iPhone 3G and BlackBerry Storm.  If this turns out to be factual, this will be a very interesting battle indeed!

5.  Will the iPhone Nano Appear in 2009?

A close contender for the win in our ‘2008 rumour’ Awards catagory, the iPhone Nano rumour continues to gain weight, with another website providing cases for the iPhone adding a dedicated Nano section.  Case manufacturers were a good indication of the shape of the new 4G iPod nano, plus this particular retailer had iPhone 3G cases prior to the handset’s launch too, so could it really be true?  Only time will tell!

6.  LG Watch Phone Set for Europe?

There’s a good chance you will be able to pretend to talk to Dick Tracy, K.I.T.T from Knight Rider and, um, Holly from Red Dwarf in 2009, as LG have plans to release their GD910 wristwatch phone here!  The tiny touchscreen should be fine for tapping in numbers and there’s a camera for video calls, but how the supposed Internet feature will work, we have no idea!

7.  Nokia 6208c Spotted in China.

The 6208 is a China-specific touchscreen mobile with a 3.2 megapixel camera, but very little else to excite at first glance, however this  latest version comes with a very unusual stylus designed to make ‘writing’ chinese characters on the touchscreen easier and more natural.  Presumably we won’t be seeing this anywhere except China, however it’s interesting to see nation-specific tweaks on mobile phones.

8.  Watch Out for the Curse of Silence!

If you run a Nokia S60 device then watch out, as an exploit has been identified which could shut down the messaging side of your mobile phone.  Dubbed ‘Curse of Silence‘, a few carefully created messages could see your Nokia requiring a factory reset if you succumb, however the chances are admittedly very slim.

9.  One Month Standby from Philips.

The Xenium phones from Philips, tagged Phoenix and Dragon – due to their unpronounceable official name of 9@9q (seriously) – both offer an amazing one month worth of standby and actually look rather nice.  Looks like Russia is the place to grab one.

10.  LG Swivel Screen Phone in Korea.

We want this little handset over in the UK soon, as the idea of 2.8″ swivel screen is cool enough, but the fact it has an 800×480 resolution and a digital TV tuner makes the LU1400 a must-have!

Here’s to an exciting 2009, see you next week!
