The annual Mobile World Congress starts on the 16th February and in addition to the usual round of phone goodness, the GSMA hold their awards ceremony for the Global Mobile Awards – the mobile phone equivalent to the Oscars. A shortlist of the categories and the nominees has been placed on the GSMA’s website and it makes for interesting reading.
It’s a nice mixture of techy and not-so-techy awards, so let’s take a look at who is in line for winning what. Top of the list of interest has to be Best Mobile Handset, for which the Nokia E71, G1, INQ1, BlackBerry Storm and LG KS360 have all been nominated. Many blogs have commented on the absence of 8-megapixel camera phones or anything made by Samsung, however in terms of quality, innovation and pushing the envelope, we agree with all aside from the KS360, which is good, but rather ordinary in this company.
Elsewhere, the BlackBerry Storm’s SurePress screen is one of the contenders for a win in Best Mobile Technology Breakthrough and the excellent Mobile BBC iPlayer is up against PlayNow from Sony Ericsson amongst others for Best Mobile Music or Video Service. Due to just missing the entry deadline, the superb Sim City on the iPhone 3G hasn’t been entered into Best Mobile Game, however Biohazard 4 Mobile Edition does make up for this.
All will be revealed at the Gala dinner on the 17th February where the winners will be announced.
