It seems Microsoft are keen to turn over a new leaf when it comes to their much-maligned mobile phone operating system.  Windows Mobile 6.5 was announced at the Mobile World Congress and promises to be a big step forward in usability over the current 6.1, however, it looks like we’ll barely be used to this latest revision before Windows Mobile 7 appears, which according to Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer, will be next year!

At their strategic update meeting on Tuesday, Ballmer reaffirmed their commitment to turning Windows Mobile around following some rather depressing  market reports and admitted even they thought the OS was ’somewhat unprofitable’.  They once more denied they would be building their own hardware – so no Zune phone – but instead wished to promote and encourage manufacturers to develop for Windows Mobile.

This confirms Motorola’s statements made a few weeks back that we would see WinMo 7 in 2010, could it also mean Motorola are working closely with Microsoft in order to be one of the first out of the gates with a new generation handset?  If so, the Windows Mobile resurgence could go hand-in-hand with Motorola’s.
