Watchmaker Creates Green Hybrid Self-Winding Cell Phone

Published March 18, 2009 by Kathryn Vercillo in Uncategorized

self-winding-phone.jpgUlysse Nardin isn’t a name that you normally hear associated with mobile phones since this company is actually a watchmaker. However, they’ve branched out to create a highly unique green smartphone which is a hybrid of phone technology and watch technology. With some really unique features, this is one of those curiosity pieces that some people won’t be able to wait to get their hands on but there are less than 2000 of these phones being made so only a handful of those people will get their wish.

The main advanced feature that really has people’s interest piqued about this new phone (which is named The Chairman) is the fact that it is self-winding in the same style as old watches. This means that the cell phone’s battery never has to be charged. You simply wind it up and the movement of the phone itself will charge it for use. The kinetic rotor that makes this happen is visible on the phone so you get a neat design that combines an antique look with a look from the future. Because it is self-winding, the phone is an eco-friendly phone, something that we see a lot of designers playing around with but none being particularly successful with in the market.

Nardin’s phone isn’t necessarily intended for the general mobile phone market. It is expected to be out of the price range of any normal phone buyer. The price hasn’t been announced but the company’s watches start out in the thousands of dollars so this unique smartphone is sure to be expensive. Those who do have an interest in the phone will be glad to know that at least it’s unlocked so it can be used on any network. The hybrid smartphone is deubting on March 26th at the BaselWorld watch show after which there should be more details about the new device.
