Sony and Ericsson to Split?

Published March 19, 2009 by Andrew Boxall in Uncategorized

This isn’t the first time we’ve heard rumours concerning the happiness of Sony and Ericsson’s marriage.  The Japanese and Swedish pair have been together since 2001 and have given us the popular and technically impressive Walkman and CyberShot branded mobile phones amongst others, but now, a report in a German magazine suggests all is not well in the household.

Ericsson may be seeking a split with Sony, who have said they will buy them out if this is the case, however with the economic conditions as they are – plus Sony’s recent performance – an IOU may have to be written.  Danske Bank, a Danish Investment bank, has told Ericsson it shouldn’t see a split as being a way to ease their struggling finances, in fact it may even end up costing money if things don’t go as planned.

If Sony and Ericsson do go their separate ways, would they both continue making mobile phones?  Sony almost certainly would, having built up the brand with two of their own biggest names, however back in the day, it was Ericsson who made some great handsets and Sony who made some rather unfortunate ones.  It’s also almost certain the recent argument over the PSP Phone rights have increased the tension.  We love Sony Ericsson mobiles and hope they both reconcile their differences soon.
