Skype App Makes iPhone Obsolete

You knew it had to happen – the Voice-over-IP (VoIP) application Skype has come to the iPhone, creating the ultimate in zen hardware.  Because when a smartphone can call without the phone, you don’t have a phone anymore – it’s just smart.  You can even use it with an iPod touch, as long as you have a mic.

The official Skype app doesn’t suffer from the echoes inflicted on earlier homebrews by audio workarounds.  It’ll only work with wifi, so you can’t Edge your way around phone bills, but for many of the techno-capable this could be the end of old-school charges.  If you’re in a wireless area and have Skype equipped friends, you can talk for free.

Apart from your regular service fees, of course.  And the data plan.  And the WiFi fee if have to sign up for a network.  And the cost of a new iPhone when the next generation comes out, of course.  And you’ll still have to pay to phone all those Skype-less troglodytes you know.  Alas, the future is here – but your friends aren’t ready for it.
