June is proving to be as exciting as predicted, with plenty of new phones announced so far. Let’s see what else has happened this week:
1. London Press Event Heralds New HTC Mobile.
HTC have invited members of the press to a conference on the 24th June, but have not told anyone what will be announced. With nothing to go on, anything and everything is fair game, with the Hero Android phone being most popular, however there’s an outside chance we could see the Touch Pro2 with Windows Mobile 6.5 on it…
2. Vodafone Music Store Goes DRM Free!
Finally, the message seems to be getting through; if you want people to buy music from you, don’t restrict their usage. From today, 350,000 songs in the Vodafone library will be DRM-free, and to celebrate this, today only, they’re offering 8 songs as free downloads! Perhaps more impressive is the chance to re-download your old DRM-locked tracks as new, unfettered versions for free.
3. The LG Watch Phone Out in July.
The LG GD910 wristwatch mobile phone, star of various tech shows this year, is almost with us. LG and Orange will be releasing the phone/watch during July this year!
4. Sony Ericsson PlayNow Gets Apps.
Hands up who is sick of hearing about App Stores? Not Sony Ericsson (or any other mobile company, as all they see are £, $ and €), as they have added an app download service to PlayNow. The store will be coming online throughout the rest of the year, with apps available for Java and Symbian-based phones.
5. Google Upgrade Their S60 App.
If you own a mobile phone running the Symbian S60 operating system and have looked on with envious eyes at those flashy location-based Google Apps running on Android and the iPhone, then be envious no more! Google have added My Location, improved search and integration with Gmail and Maps to the S60 app. Download it from Google themselves.
6. Limited Edition Evengelion Phone.
Fans of the Japanese anime should also love this phone, thanks to its authentic style and user interface inspired by Evengelion. It has a 10 megapixel camera and a 3.3″ screen, but will be limited to just 30,000 and available only in Japan.
7. Three New Acer Handsets Spotted, with Added Snapdragon Goodness!
Acer has been showing off their C1, L1 and F1 Windows Mobile smartphones at the Computex show in Taiwan this week. The C1 and L1 are touchscreen phones with Windows Mobile 6.5, which the F1 uses the 1Ghz Snapdragon processor, soon to be seen in the Toshiba TG01!
8. BenQ Working on Android Phone.
BenQ may not be that well-known in the UK, but they’re are in parts of Europe and the Far East. Word is they’re planning to launch both a smartphone and a netbook running Google’s Android during 2010.
9. Sony Ericsson Xperia X2 Leaked?
This less than impressive picture could be the world’s first look at the X2, Sony Ericsson’s follow up to the Xperia X1. If it parallels the X-Men movies, the X2 should be superior to the first in almost every way, and if it parallels Sony Ericsson’s announce/release schedule, we’ll see this announced this year and released in 2011.
10. Beware the Mobile Elbow!
A US surgeon has warned that extensive mobile conversations, where your phone is held up to your ear with your elbow bent, could result in ‘cubital tunnel syndrome‘, or ‘mobile elbow’. The ulnar nerve, which is stretched in this condition, is also the cause of the ‘funny bone’ sensation, so if you feel something like that while on the phone, it’s time to go hands-free!
