Google is gearing up to take over your phone line, preparing Google Voice to act as an online administrator for all your phone needs. It will provide searchable SMS histories, text-message transcripts of voice mails, and forward your phone to any device you want.
The latest addition to the feature set is designed to make the transition to future-phones as painless as possible, with number porting apparently on the cards. This means that you can choose to keep your old number, no matter what “actual” number your service provider assigns you – Google Voice will map your old number onto your incoming and outgoing calls. Quite how this works could be a little tricky, but that’s why they’re in the Googleplex and we’re here writing about it.
