Dell Smartphone Finally Official, But Only in China

Published August 17, 2009 by Andrew Boxall in Mobile Phones, News

Mobile Phone from DellLooking at this picture of the Dell Mini 3i, it seems very familiar.  We can’t put our finger on what phone the 3i’s design reminds us of, but we’re pretty sure it’s a relatively popular one!  The Dell smartphone has been on the cards for ages and ages, with us reporting on the possibility of an iPhone-like model as far back as September last year and as recently as last week.

However, the wait is over – if you live in China anyway – as Dell have unveiled the Mini 3i for the first time.  As predicted it runs Open Mobile System (OMS), which is a version of Google Android developed by China Mobile to incorporate their own download services, which is displayed on a 3.5″ capacitive touchscreen.  A 3 megapixel camera can be found by flipping the phone over, plus there’s a MicroSD card slot and Bluetooth too.

So far, so generic, but it gets worse, as the Mini 3i is a 2G phone and lacks Wi-Fi, so perhaps it’s better for the phone to stay in China where it will likely sink without trace, especially if the rumoured China Unicom/Apple iPhone deal does go ahead.  Dell, we expected better from you.
