Today, Sony Ericsson have made the Xperia X2 official, joining Nokia’s effort in making the first week of September one of the most exciting in terms of new releases we’ve had since June. The X2 is the successor to the Xperia X1, the flawed but beautifully built QWERTY smartphone from last year.
The Xperia X2 retains the touchscreen side-slider design, but has had an overhaul where it most needed it, the operating system. Now that Microsoft have dated Windows Mobile 6.5, everyone is free to announce their handsets running it, and Sony Ericsson appear to be the first to to do this. Windows Mobile 6.5 will be complimented by the second generation of the Panels UI, which is better looking and more customisable than before, plus the new ’tile wave’ animation looks great.
All this will be displayed on the 3.2 WVGA resistive touchscreen, so Sony Ericsson have had no choice but to include a stylus again, plus it’s looking very likely the X2 will be powered by the same 528Mhz Qualcomm processor found in the X1, despite hopes it would receive a power boost. A MicroSD card slot will expand the 110MB internal storage, and the phone has 256MB of RAM and 512 ROM.
Other features include an 8.1 megapixel camera with autofocus, Assisted GPS, 3G, HSDPA and Wi-Fi, A2DP Bluetooth and an XviD compatible media player. One big improvement over the X1 is a 30 gram reduction in weight, taking the X2 down to a more manageable 115 grams.
Although no official release date has been given, we expect the Xperia X2 to closely follow WinMo 6.5′s 6th October outing. OK Sony Ericsson, you’ve given the world the X2, now surely you can give us some more on the Android X3?
