Motorola announced their Android event a few weeks back, giving the game away pretty early, before yesterday’s leaked images spoiled the party even further, however none of this mattered, as there was something so gratifying about Motorola – for many, the manufacturer of their first mobile phone – holding a big event and unveiling a mobile phone that people will actually want to buy!
The phone in question is called the Dext, or Cliq in the USA, and will run on Google’s Android OS with a new, integrated social networking system named MOTOBLUR that features customised home screens filled with widgets to allow super-fast updating of your favourite service. This integration will also continue in the address book. Let’s take a look through the rest of the specification:
- The screen is a 3.1″ capacitive touchscreen with an HVGA (480×320) resolution.
- It’s 3G with HSDPA and Wi-Fi and A2DP v2.0 Bluetooth.
- A 5 megapixel camera with autofocus.
- Assisted GPS with Google Maps and a digital compass.
- Google’s Android OS with the MOTOBLUR social network interface.
- All the Google family of apps plus Quickoffice, YouTube, Accuweather and Shazam.
- 1GB of internal memory and a MicroSD card slot to expand this up to 32GB.
- A 3.5mm jack plug socket.
- Side-sliding QWERTY keyboard.
- 15mm thick and 163 grams.
The handset will be available in white and titanium and will be exclusive to Orange in the UK at launch, which is expected to be in time for Christmas. Motorola should be officially launching the UK model at their 15th September event.
So, will the Dext be Motorola’s saviour? From the pictures the design looks great and MOTOBLUR is very much ‘of the moment’; but will it be enough to draw smartphone fans back to Motorola, who have not made a popular high-end device for quite some time. Let us know in the comments whether the Dext will be making it on to your Christmas list and if not, why not.
