Mobile Phones More Important Than Sex for Many Americans

Published October 7, 2009 by Kathryn Vercillo in Features, Humour

Mobile or Sex?Samsung has released the results of a series of studies that they completed in various cities throughout the U.S. Among the questions asked was whether the respondent would rather give up his/her mobile phone for a year or go without sex for the same period of time. A surprising number of people said that they’d give up sex before they’d get rid of their phones.

According to the results of the surveys, approximately twenty-seven to thirty-three percent of residents in Boston, Philadelphia, D.C. and Denver would be willing to give up their sex lives for a year if they could keep their phones. Sure, that means that a majority of people would still choose sex but it also means that one-third to one-fourth of people prefer their phones to their partners.

Interestingly, women were a lot quicker to give up their phones than men were. It seems predictable at first (stereotypes suggest that men would be less likely than women to give up sex). But then again, stereotypes also suggest that men are the ones who are in love with their tech toys and this survey suggests that women are the ones would prefer the phone to sex. Maybe that vibrate button helps them in making their decision.

The survey also found that an overwhelming number of phone users enjoy text messaging and a large percentage of them would prefer to text than to talk. Perhaps they figured that they could cheat the system and get both some sex and the phone by sexting during their hands-off year. Or maybe there are 30% of people who aren’t getting lucky anyway so they figured they might as well keep their mobiles.
