UK Smartphone Success down to Bored Brits?

Published October 8, 2009 by Harriet Rhodes in Articles, Features

Bored / Fed Up?

The Mobile phone market is one of the fastest growing consumer areas to date. As the Smartphone phenomenon sweeps the globe have we ever stopped to think why? Perhaps it’s down to the ‘new media’ society we currently live in, with a constant demand for technological advancements. Maybe it’s because people want to be able to communicate with one another, whenever and however they want; or could it have something to do with the human race as a whole and the need for round the clock entertainment?

Putting a products market share down to boredom may sound ridiculous, but a poll has revealed that the average Brit spend at least five hours and 59 minutes of every week feeling utterly bored with life. 13 days a year are spent being completely fed up! Admittedly, the main reason for feeling so down in the dumps is money; in close second is something the Brits are renowned for, waiting in queues. So could it be possible that the reason more of us are reaching for the Smartphone is to keep boredom at bay? Scott O’Donnell, spokesman for www.triviala.com, which conducted the research said “Seven out of 10 people polled admit they log onto the Internet when they are feeling bored and this can be a great way to keep the mind occupied” If you find yourself stuck in a queue or waiting for public transport, (both of which feature in the top 10 activities to induce boredom) then it looks like the Smartphone could be the answer to combat those depressed feelings. Features that now we take for granted, Web Browsing, Application downloads and built in MP3 players all offer refuge from the humdrum of daily life.

If you’ve managed to get this far without switching off, here are the top twenty things that bore us to tears:

  1. Having no money
  2. Waiting in queues
  3. Listening to people moaning about feeling ill
  4. Waiting for internet pages to load
