Despite being commonplace in other areas of the world, mobile streaming television is still in its infancy in Europe, however Sky have launched an application for the iPhone, which should move things on a little. The app in question is simply called Sky Mobile TV and yes, it does exactly what you would expect!
However, before we get to excited, there are one or two restrictions in play. Firstly, although the app is free to download, you’ll have to pay a £6 monthly subscription fee, for which you’ll get access to the standard Sky Sports package you can have if you’re a residential Sky subscriber, meaning Sky News and all the Sky Sports and ESPN channels. So although you won’t be getting Sky One, you will be getting all the major football, golf and other big sporting events.
Secondly, as with other iPhone high bandwidth applications, it’s only usable over Wi-Fi and not 3G. Although this isn’t so much of a problem these days with the growing amount of Wi-Fi hotspots, it can never truly be classed as streaming TV on the move if you can’t watch it whenever you want. None of the above changes if you’re an Orange iPhone user, however O2 are offering three months free subscription to the service to all its iPhone customers.
So, has anyone tried this yet? We would love to know your thoughts on the quality of the picture, standard of service and so on. We’re certainly hoping this is a success, as we predict Sky will follow it up with other channels in the future if this one gets enough subscribers.

Im on the free 02 trial and have been very impressed so far. Great picture quality, almost HD in appearance. I may even continue when the trial ends and i dont pay for anything like this willingly
I have been using sky mobile tv for two days now and although the picture is good there is a problem with lagging.
I would have thought they would provide a stable stream as it costs extra on top of the sky subscription.
I bought the subscription earlier today. Its an absolutley fantastic app. The picture quality is essentially as HD as an Iphone can go, and the loading times are fast. This may sound like an overly positive comment, but im only telling it how it is. Heres hoping for more channels in the future.
