Top Ten Mobile Phone News Stories of the Week

Published November 14, 2009 by Andrew Boxall in News, Weekly Round-ups

After a very busy start to November, this week has been a little quieter, but there are still plenty of mobile related news gems out there if you go looking!  Here are ten of our favourites:

1.  Samsung Still Loves Other Operating Systems.

From out of the blue earlier this week came Samsung’s announcement they would be introducing a new smartphone operating system in 2010.  Named bada, it was then publicised that Samsung would be dropping support of Symbian and potentially, others too.  However Samsung have put minds at rest by issuing a statement confirming they will be ‘multi-OS’ and still produce Symbian, Android, Windows Mobile and Linux phones.

2.  Droid Sales Indicate Motorola Success Story.

It’s so good to see Motorola with an interesting product selling well again!  The company say that over its first weekend of availability, the Droid reached 100,000 sales – not bad for a phone no one had heard of six months ago!  Together with the Cliq/DEXT, Motorola expect to reach 1 million Android phones sold before the end of the year.

3.   Qualcomm Take Snapdragon Performance to the Masses.

Keeping their Snapdragon chipset for only flashiest mobiles isn’t a bad thing, especially as Qualcomm have now introduced the MSM7×30’s.  These are for use in a variety of phones and will run between 800Mhz and 1Ghz, support 720p decoding, 3D graphics, 5.1 audio, GPS and a 12 megapixel camera.

Motorola Droid4.  Motorola Droid Exposed for All to See!

Lusting after a Motorola Droid?  Can’t wait for Euro release details?  Examined every picture available?  Well, here is the Motorola Droid in all its naked glory, stripped down to component level in loving detail.  Dirty.

5.   Ringbacks Making More Money than Ringtones.

The ringback is a replacement tone for the regular ‘ring ring’ you hear when calling someone.  According to Real Networks, Vodafone and T-Mobile in Germany made a whopping 34 million euros from selling them last year!  They’re available in the UK, but apparently few people know – or care – about them.

Samsung Duel SIM6.   Samsung Show-off Two Dual-SIM Handsets.

Samsung’s new B5722 and C6112 mobile phones are the latest members of the Duo range of dual-SIM phones.  The B5722 is a 2.8″ touchscreen phone with TouchWiz and a 3 megapixel camera, while the C6112 is a true Samsung style slider handset.

7.   Keitai F-04B A Step Closer to Modular Reality?

Created by Fujitsu and Japanese network NTT Docomo, the Keitai F-04B phone splits into two pieces, one with a keyboard and the other woking as a screen, all linked up by Bluetooth.  A projector add-on will allow movies to be projected from the phone.  This former concept is ready to become reality in the near future.

8.  Apple Pass Nokia in Profits.

At the close of Q3 2009, Apple are reported to have pulled in $1.6 billion in profits from the iPhone worldwide, while Nokia have banked $1.1 billion for the same period.  If these figures are correct, this will see Apple take the lead in the mobile profit tables.

9.  2015 – Nokia Style.

This is an interesting look at the potential of connected mobile services.  Nokia have put together this video based around predictions from their R&D department, about what mobile life will be like in five years time.

Hello Kitty Phone10.  Hello, Kitty.

We can never resist Hello Kitty merchandise and as far as that genre stretches, this new phone is actually rather understated!  The 924H KT is a Japan-only model and has their 1-Set streaming TV and GPS, plus those pink Hello Kitty logos appear to glow when the flip is opened!
