India Banning Mobile Phones State-wide

mobile_phone_ban.jpgIf you think the UK is going a bit insane with the “safety and security” regulations, you’re right, but you still haven’t seen anything: India has banned mobile phones for almost four million people on the grounds they could be “misused by terrorists.”  It’s not known if they’ll ban the use of hands and feet as well – after all, those evil terrorists often walk places, and sometimes the vicious dogs even hold things!

The government banned pre-paid mobile phones across the entire state of Kashmir on the 1st of November, shutting down essential communications for anyone who made the mistake of “living in Kashmir.”  Note: pretty much every phone there is pre-paid. They’ve basically told an entire troubled region “we think you’re all terrorists.”  Even over here a government attempt to shut down cellphones would trigger riots, and London doesn’t exactly have a history as a disputed region maltreated by the government.  There have already been protests, and all the strong anti-government feeling you’d expect when a county of over half a billion handsets suddenly says “Except for you guys!”

It’s an idiotic security measure that makes airport screeners look like James Bond.  We’ll have to wait and see what the full effects of insulting four million people will be.
