Geek List: 10 Smart Books About Mobile Phones

Were you the kind of kid that divided your time equally between having your nose in a book and tearing apart your parents’ consumer electronics just to see if you could put them back together? Does your fancy get tickled by smart cell phone stuff like mobile phone comics, mobile phone art and cell phone poetry? If so then it’s not a far leap to think that you might like to read some great books that have been published on the topic of mobile phones.

The following ten books are all smart, interesting books that tell you a lot about cell phones:

1.     Cell Phone Culture: Mobile Technology in Everyday Life  by Gerard Goggin. This is a really comprehensive book about the way that mobile phones have impacted out entire culture. It looks at everything from the design of mobile phones to the way that cell phones have impacted the art world. This book is a bit academic in its approach to the topic but that’s not going to hinder you if you’re truly a geek now is it?!

2.     Mobile Phones: The New Talking Drums of Everyday Africa . This book also looks at the way that mobile phones have impacted culture. However this book is specific to the way that cell phones have dramatically changed the every day life of people living in developing nations in Africa. Mobile phones in developing nations are a very interesting topic to study for a variety of different reasons. This book covers them all!

3.     Personal, Portable, Pedestrian: Mobile Phones in Japanese Life . This book is also about the impact of the mobile phone on a single culture but this culture is at the opposite end of the spectrum from the cutting edge nations. Japan puts out some of the most interesting stuff in terms of mobile technology and this book talks about the impact that this has had on life there. Admittedly this book is several years old so it’s not completely up to date in terms of its facts and doesn’t cover some of the most modern changes to the Japanese cell phone culture. Nevertheless it’s a smart book that gives you some great insight into the earlier days of this topic.

4.     I’m on Me Mobile: An Irresistible Collection of True Mobile-phone Conversations  by Andrew Ward and Anton Ripper. This book is one of the oldest mobile phone books that is worth recommending. Most books on this topic have to be as fresh as the latest new technology that’s being released. However this is a classic book that just repeats overheard cell phone conversations. It’s less on the “smart” side and more on the funny side but totally worth a read for almost anyone to enjoy.

5.     Heidegger, Habermas and the Mobile Phone (Postmodern Encounters)  by George Myerson. If you really want to get your smarty pants on then you should take a look at this book which combines philosophy and economics with a look at the impact of the mobile phone. It specifically focuses on the shift from e-commerce to m-commerce and discusses the impact that mobile phones have had on communication in our society.

6.     Spread Spectrum: Hedy Lamarr and The Mobile Phone  by Rob Walters. This is an interesting niche topic book that discusses something most people aren’t aware of while providing a bit of fun gossip about a couple of interesting people. Basically it’s about Hedy Lamarr, the Hollywood star, and George Antheil, the pianist and composer. What has this got to do with mobile phones? Well it turns out that way back in the 1940′s these two teamed up to patent spread spectrum technology. Although the book is primarily about the use of this technology for radio its technology that relates to mobile phones making this a cell phone book worth checking out.

7.     Cell Phones and The Dark Deception: Find Out What You’re Not Being Told…And Why  by Carleigh Cooper. There are a lot of people out there who believe that mobile phones are harming our health. There are also a lot of studies out there which indicate that this probably isn’t true. Nevertheless, people continue to write about the topic. If it’s one that interests you then this book will be appealing. It gives information about the potential health hazards of electro-pollution and mobile phones.

8.     Dead Man’s Cell Phone by Sarah Ruhl. This is actually a play but you can buy it in book form. It’s fictional but it poses smart and interesting questions about life. The setting is a café where a woman has picked up a man’s cell phone that keeps ringing incessantly. She answers the phone and pretends to have known the man then carries on various conversations. Although not about mobile phones per se, the cell phone is a crucial part of the story and the story is a thought-provoking one.

9.  The Cell Phone Baby Book: AN INSTRUCTION MANUAL FOR GENERATION X PARENTS  by Lauren Reidy Scheib. This book isn’t exactly about mobile phones. Instead it’s about raising a baby. However it is written in the language best understood by cell phone users. It’s a funny book but a useful one and it makes some smart insights into cell phone use and raising babies today.

10. Cell Phone Etiquette: Observations from a Mom  by Michelle Cimino. Do you know someone who isn’t quite as smart as you consider yourself to be – at least when it comes to cell phone use? Perhaps they could use this book which provides funny, common-sense thoughts on how to behave appropriately with your mobile phone. If you don’t know such a person then count yourself lucky and consider reading this anyway because it’s such a fun observational little book.
