Here we go! With December underway the countdown to Christmas has really begun, so while we shouldn’t expect anything too ground-breaking in terms of new releases, there are often a few gems sneaked out to an unsuspecting public. Until then, let’s take a look at some more mobile news stories of the week:
1. How Symbian Could Look in 2010.
Nokia obviously want to make their intentions concerning Symbian clear, following the rumour they could drop the OS, by showing off some concept shots of a Symbian redesign. The pictures show a far more attractive UI than we’re used too from Symbian, while Nokia have promised to streamline the OS user experience too. Will it actually look like this when it’s released though?
2. Samsung Reach Sales Milestone.
If you want proof that touchscreen phones have been a massive success, then take a glance at Samsung’s sales figures. The Korean manufacturer has announced they have sold 40 million touchscreen handsets this year alone, taking their grand total to 50 million. Their number one seller is the S5230 Star.
3. Verizon Continues Anti-iPhone Assault in USA.
Well, you could never accuse Verizon’s advertising folk of not saying what they mean, as the latest Verizon/Motorola Droid TV advert proves. Would want a phone like a princess’s tiara? No, us neither!
4. Android 2.1 Out December 11th…
Although it’s not going to be a huge update in terms of functions or features, there are certain to be one or two interesting additions to Google’s OS come the 11th December. What they will be will be revealed on the day.
5. …and the Motorola Sholes Could be Debuting It.
New photos which likely show a Chinese equivalent of the Motorola Sholes suggest the phone/tablet will be running this latest version of Android. Other specification details seem to change daily, with the possibility of a 5 or 8 megapixel camera, HDMI or no HDMI and a 3.7″ or 3.8″ screen all being touted.
6. Project Trinity Concept Phone.
This video shows the Project Trinity smartphone, designed by Ziilabs – part of the Creative Technology family - in China, which is going to be sold to companies as a platform on which they can build and customise their own phones. It has a capacitive touchscreen and in the video, it runs Android.
7. LG’s 2010 Sales Plan.
It’s a simple one too, as they have plans to launch 30 new mobile phones during the first six months of 2010! That’s a lot of new handsets, with which LG wants to gain a further 15 percent market share by the end of the year. While the phones themselves are still a mystery, LG’s VP of Telecom Business has said that 10 will be touchscreen controlled and 15 will be 3G.
8. Android Music Store Launched.
It’s not an official Google store, but Mewbox is designed specifically for the Android OS. The store contains 4 million DRM-free tracks, all priced to compete with iTunes, and they’re accessible via the free to download Mexbox Vanilla app. If you are an Android user, this will certainly be worth trying out.
9. China Shuns the iPhone.
If the iPhone had this sort of reaction when it was launched in the UK and USA, what a different world we would live in! China has recently enjoyed the launch of the iPhone and to celebrate, the website taobao.com set up its own dedicated store, from which it has sold just five phones in two weeks!
10. The Real Chocolate Phone?
Move over LG, as the Sharp Q-Pot isn’t just a phone with a chocolate-bar type keypad, no, it has a chocy-style 3D-effect casing, chocolate wallpapers and even comes in a special chocolate box! Just 13,000 of these very special phones will be made, and you’ll have to travel to Japan to get one.
