Pickpocket Gangs Steal Mobile Phones at Concerts

Published December 8, 2009 by Kathryn Vercillo in News, Other

Be careful the next time that you go to attend a concert especially if you’re going to one of the popular music venues in London. These venues have become the latest hotspot for gangs of pickpocketers. These gangs may or may not take off with your wallet but that’s not what they seem to have come to get. Instead it’s your mobile phone that these bad guys are after.Tips for protecting yourself from having your mobile phone stolen at music events include:

  • Be aware of the fact that this is happening. It’s a serious problem with pickpocket gangs targeting some of London’s most popular venues. Venues that have recently been attacked include the Brixton Academy and Hammersmith Apollo. Over fifty mobile phones have been stolen in a single night.
  • Be aware of who is around you. It’s important to make yourself aware of what is happening around you at any concerts that you attend. It’s easy to get wrapped up in the music that you’re there to see but you shouldn’t do so at the risk of losing your cell phone.
  • Pay special attention to protecting particular phones. Some phones are more popular with these pickpocket gangs than others. If you have a BlackBerry, an iPhone or any other advanced touchscreen smartphone like this then you will want to be particularly careful because these are the most popular phones for pickpocketers. If you have one of these phones you may even want to leave at home when going to these events.
  • Stay out of the mosh pit. This is the most common place for people to be targeted by pickpockets because you’re a lot less likely to notice someone grabbing your phone from you in here.
  • Put your phone in your front pocket. It’s harder for pickpocketers to get to it there without you noticing.
If your mobile phone does get stolen from you while you are at a concert or another crowded event then you should report the theft to the police. Most people just figure that it’s their fault that they lost the phone so they don’t report it. However more reporting of these events should lead to better control over these pickpocket gangs in the future.
