Here are ten of this week’s top mobile phone news stories, including Android’s image fix, Ovi news and a very golden Nokia phone.
1. Ovi 2.0 Out in Spring 2010.
Nokia’s Ovi Store is currently being entirely redesigned and rebuilt, with a view to launching the new platform during the spring next year. Nokia ’s VP of Product and Media has also said that in its current guise, the Ovi Store sees almost 1 million downloads per day, a figure improving 100% month on month.
2. Android Needs an Image Consultant.
But not in the same way as Tiger Woods does right now, rather because according to an IDC study, people don’t know what it is. The research shows that although the Google name is recognised, people don’t know what Android is and therefore, tend to avoid it when shopping.
3. Is iLearning the Next Big Thing?
Secondary school children in London have been given free iPhones to see if they aid learning, and more importantly if they could replace text books in the classroom. Pupils get £15 to spend downloading educational apps, the students with the most constructive feedback get yet another top up to spend as they wish.
4. Nokia Continue Store Closures.
Nokia closing their Regent Street store was a little surprising given their popularity in the UK, but the 2010 closure of their New York and Chicago stores is a little less so. They claim the shops have raised awareness concerning Nokia phones in the States, but they’re still only responsible for one in ten overall mobile phone sales there.
5. Skype and Skyfire Updated.
The alternative mobile web browser Skyfire has been taken to version 1.5 and is available to download for any Windows Mobile device running 5.0 through to 6.5. Skype has also been released as a beta version for Symbian mobile phones, specifically 3rd Edition FP1 and FP2 phones including the E71 and N95.
6. Samsung Survey Indicates bada Gameplan.
Samsung’s new OS, bada, appears to be focused around applications and judging by their keenness to involve developers, they want them to be good. Who wouldn’t want this when their survey shows that 42% of feature phone users would download apps if they could, of which 54% of them would pay up to 5 euros for each one!
7. Apple On Schedule for New 2010 iPhone?
Mobile Review Editor, Eldar Murtazin, tweeted that Foxconn, a Taiwanese electronic component manufacturer, has received an order to produce the next generation of iPhone. If true, this would be in keeping with the cycle we’ve seen so far with the iPhone range.
8. Peek Coming to Europe.
Obsessed with email? Don’t have a phone with email or a browser? Then the Peek could be for you! The QWERTY device will cost 99 euros when it’s released in Europe on the 15th December, and will come with six months of free service, with a 12 euro monthly cost after that. Future updates could see the addition of browsing and Twitter support too.
9. More Weak iPhone Sales in China.
Following dismal reports from other iPhone retailers, China Unicom has joined in with the tales of woe, saying they have sold just 100,000 official Wi-Fi-less iPhones over a period of 40 days.
10. Nokia Join the Gold Rush!
The Nokia 6700 is a sleek and stylish mobile phone which looks great regardless of whether it’s sitting on a boardroom table or a bar room table. Well, it did anyway, as Nokia have now announced the Gold Edition which as you would expect, is covered in 18-carat gold. Goodbye good taste!
