This time next week it’ll be turkey and not mobile phones on our minds, so let’s see what our final pre-Christmas round-up has in store:
1. Nexus One Trademarked by Google.
Although it doesn’t really confirm the Google Phone will actually be called this, the very fact Google have stood in front of their friends and family and pledged to honour the name, rather suggests it will be. What’s more, speculation has increased that we will see the phone during the first week of January 2010 and that it will be available internationally. Us? Excited? Yes!
2. The Christmas Tree, Mobile Phone Style.
This incredible art installation uses fifty phones, each controlled by a computer and given its own distinct sound, to make a very modern and completely unique Christmas tree. Take a look at the video to see and hear it in action!
3. US iPhone Usage Increases.
A recent comScore report has indicated that in the USA, iPhone usage has overtaken Windows Mobile, but still trails behind RIM. Conducted monthly, the comScore results are considered very accurate.
4. Sony Ericsson Delay X2.
The follow up to the X1, which also took many months to be released, has been hit with delays. The Xperia X2 is being tweaked and instead of being on sale before the end of 2009, it is now expected to be out during January next year.
5. Acer Prepare for an Android 2010.
Further proof that 2010 is likely to be Android’s year is given by Acer, who have indicated that they will be launching as many as six Android-based smartphones over the next six months. Availability around the world has not been discussed.
6. BlackBerry Twitter App Imminent?
After several tweets appeared on Twitter as coming from Twitter for BlackBerry, we can expect RIM to announce their own native Twitter app for their phones shortly. This would further bolster the excellent range of networking apps available for BlackBerry and is expected to feature push and geo-location technology.
7. Orchestral Mobiles in Estonia
This piece of music was created using 300 mobile phones, all donated by people from all over Estonia, and controlled by a MIDI keyboard. Using a variety of ringtones and alerts, the software used actually calls the phones in realtime! Whether you like it or not, it’s an impressive feat!
8. Synaptics to Demo Fuse UI at CES.
Fuse is a new user interface designed by Synaptics, where haptic feedback, multi-touch, proximity and grip sensors plus 3D graphics all come together to create a clever smartphone control system. It will be on display at the CES show in Las Vegas and at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.
9. Google Navigation Hacked.
The US-only Google Maps Navigation seen on the Motorola Droid has been hacked to work on international Android phones. So, although it’s not for the tech-shy, if you’re brave enough you can give Google’s latest piece of software a trial run on your phone!
10. Oppo to Join the Mobile Brigade?
Oppo are well-known for making excellent DVD and Blu-ray players, and it now looks like they may bring their expertise to the mobile world, with this concept smartphone. The slide-out QWERTY keyboard is hidden beneath a 3.5″ touchscreen and although reported to use Android, Palm’s webOS is shown in the pictures.
