
2009 was a terrific year for the mobile phone industry. Sure, it wasn’t really great for some companies in terms of sales and numbers and all of that. But it was an amazing year in terms of new handsets, leaps in technology, creativity in the world of mobile phone art and other such areas of the industry. We did our best to make sure that we shared all of that stuff here with you on the blog.Here’s a look back at the year with the five best posts from each month in 2009:
JANUARY
The Ultimate Google G1 Review. I wrote a lot of different mobile phone reviews in January 2009 but the one that was most fun and interesting to write about was the G1. There are going to be tons of Android phones coming out in 2010 but the first ones are the ones that we’ll remember from 2009.
INQ1: The Ultimate Review. Andrew also did a really great review in January last year of a phone that is totally dedicated to Facebook fans. Mobile social networking has grown a lot in the past year alone so this really set the tone for the year.
Idiot’s Guide to Mobile Phone Excuses. Luke did a fun post last year on the dumb things that people say when using their mobile phone as an excuse for their own moronic behavior.
The Most Expensive Mobile Phone Ever. Patrick brought us a short-and-sweet post about a phone that came out last year and cost £1.6 million!!
British Airways to Offer Latest in In-Flight Mobile. Mobile phone use on airplanes was a popular topic at the beginning of 2009.
FEBRUARY
Cellphone Streelights. Luke reported last February about a lighting system in Germany where people can use their mobile phones to turn on street lamps. How cool is that?
The Wrong Robots. Luke also did a fun story on 3 wacky robots.
Blow it to Get it Excited. Perhaps even cooler is the mobile phone technology Andrew reported on about a phone that you blow on to use it. Did you hear about this news last year when it came out?
Are Mobile Phones Making Us Crazy? I did a post on all of the different mental health problems that may (or may not) be caused by mobile phones. If you’ve ever felt phantom vibrations then you might be a victim.
Mobile Banking: Everything You Need to Know. This was my first post of the year on mobile banking which has grown increasingly popular and is expected to really blow up in 2010.
MARCH
The Coin is Mightier Than the Crunch. Credit Crunch Phone Revealed. Warren’s title says it all on this one.
Nokia 6700 Classic: The Ultimate Review. Andrew did a great job summing up this simple candybar style phone.
The Ultimate HTC Magic Review. My favorite review that came out in March was the one I got to write about the HTC Magic which was an interesting little phone to get the chance to check out.
10 Tragic Accidents Caused by Mobile Phones. A much less uplifting post that I did, but one that I think was on an important topic, was all about the train and car accidents that are caused by people using their mobile phones while operating vehicles.
Egypt vs. The Killer Text Message. You have to read Luke’s post to believe it.
APRIL
Obscene Caller Awards. Luke kept us entertained in April with this post.
10 Ways Cell Phones are Used to Catch Criminals. Luke writes about them and I wrote about how to catch them!
Pros and Cons of OLED Screens. This was a new type of technology that started popping up in the headlines in the first quarter of the year so I thought I’d learn more about it and report it here for you.
Samsung, Ericsson and LG Increase Mid-Range Presence. Andrew gave us some important info about the new relatively affordable phones from various handset makers.
Nokia Engages Star Trek Themed 5800. Andrew also gave us the heads up on this fun phone back in April.
MAY
History of Books Written on Mobile Phones. Cell phone novels became really popular in Japan back in 2005 but they became interesting again this year when a Western author made a bestseller’s list with one.
New Smartphones May Need MultiCore Processors. I was really interested by the news last spring that tech experts are working on multi-core processing for mobile phones.
T-Mobile Returns with a Sing-A-Long. Andrew gave us a spring update on a new mobile phone video ad that’s pretty fun.
Insane iPhone Apps: The Revenge. Luke let us know about three ridiculous iPhone apps that probably never needed to be created.
Texting Trashed Our Teens. Luke also gave us one of the first of many articles of the year about the problems that accompany teens and texting.
JUNE
Be Social with the New LG GW520 and GT505. Andrew provided us with early-on info about new mobile social networking handsets.
Femtocells Coming in July from Vodafone. Andrew also gave us the latest news about this important emerging mobile phone technology.
20 Twitterers to Follow if you Love Mobile Phones. Anyone who has an interest in cell phone news and updates should take a look at this mid-year article.
Mobile Phones and Movies. I enjoyed writing about the relationship between mobile phones and movies including using phones to watch them and make them.
Killer Laser Technology. Some Seriously Scary Weapons. Count on Luke to keep bringing us info about the scary stuff!
JULY
Is Teen Sexting Really a Horrible Thing? More and more news kept coming out all year long about teens and texting so I thought I’d tackle the topic of sexting among teenagers.
5 Types of Technology for Improving Mobile Battery Power. Smartphones are requiring more energy than ever before so I researched how we’re going to make that work as time goes on.
Nokia Phones Shoot Noisettes Music Video. Andrew always gives us the coolest updates on mobile music and advertising.
Mobile Phone Extortion. Luke told us frightening tales about people using cell phones to extort money from others.
Criminal Call Craziness. He also updated us on the latest news related to mobile phone calling criminals.
AUGUST
Criminal Callers Continue. Luke found more criminal callers to tell us about the following month! Funny stuff.
HTC Mega Aiming for Middle Ground. Luke let us know in August that HTC was making good on a promise to offer more middle-ground handsets.
World’s First Welsh Language Phone Appears. And Andrew told us all about it!
INQ’s 2 New Phones from Social Network Fans. Andrew is great about giving us all of the info about the best phones for mobile social network lovers.
Solar Power for your Mobile Phone. I love researching green mobile phone issues so it was fun to learn about the latest solar power news in the cell phone industry. The sunny month of August seemed like the perfect time to do that.
SEPTEMBER
Mobile Mastscapes and the Future of Our Global Landscape. Another earth-y issue that I wrote about this year was the way our landscape is changing since there are so many cell phone towers going up these days.
Getting to Grips with Palm’s OS. Andrew teaches us what we need to know about this mobile operating system.
Samsung Gets Fashionable with 2 New Corby Phones. He also told us all about these new stylish handsets.
Japan Considers New Anti-Piracy Measures. Luke lets us in on the latest industry news from Japan.
A Camera, A Phone, A Cameraphone? Harriet joined us in September and one of her best posts let us know about the Samsung W880.
OCTOBER
Eco Accessory Given Solar Voice. Harriet followed that up with some info for us in October about a solar-powered Bluetooth headset. Cool stuff.
Japanese Reveal Wooden Phones. She also gave us some fun stuff coming out of Japan.
A Roundup of October’s Hottest New Mobile Phones. Autumn is a great time of year for new phone releases so Andrew gave us the heads up on what was about to come out.
Red Bull Mobile Provider. Luke let us in on an interesting little tidbit about how Red Bull wanted to get involved in the mobile phone industry.
A-Z Glossary of Weird and Wacky Mobile Phone Vocabulary. My favorite post to write in October was this glossary of weird words that we use to talk about mobile phones today. Intexticated, keitai and refusnik all made the list.
NOVEMBER
Going Green: Mobile Phones and Wind Power. This was my all-time favorite post of the year to research and write about. I am so excited about what could happen with wind power in the mobile industry in the future.
