Mobile Phone Flingers

Mobile Phone ThrowingWe’ve all experienced that moment of anger and the only way to relieve it is to smash, hit, break or throw something. If you look hard enough I bet you’ve also got half a dozen old mobile phones lying around the house, not quite with me… don’t worry because I doubt many are!

The art of ‘Mobile Phone Throwing’ is something I stumbled across a while ago, and despite what you might think (I imagined a load of loons in a field smashing up phones) people over in Finland have been mastering this sport for the past decade. Then in 2004 someone thought they’d bring it over to England, finally a reason to lash out at these confusing bundles of technological wizardry! Whilst it might sound odd, believe it or not there are competitions dedicated to this sport, the ‘UK Mobile Phone Throwing Championship’ is an annual event with strict rules to follow:

1.   Each thrower will have 3 throws, taken in turn with the others within their allocated group.

2.   The thrower must use one of the phones provided for them.

3.   The thrower can use any method of throwing.

4.   The throw must land within the side-lines marked out on the grass.

5.  If you step over the line at the end of the runway, the throw will not stand.

7.   The length of throw is judged from where the phone first hits the ground, not from where it ends up.

8.   The steward’s decisions are final!

There are various ways to take part, you can bring your own phone to throw or if you can’t find one that you’re willing to hurl through the air, you can use one provider by the organisers. It’s a great way to get rid of old mobiles as once thrown, the ones which can be salvaged will be sent off for recycling. So you can vent and help the planet at the same time…fantastic!

Now this is no event for the fainthearted, things are taken very seriously, especially when there are champion titles and records to break. The current UK records stand at 95.83m in the men’s category and 53.52m for the women. So, if you think you’ve got a mean throw or just want to fling your phone about then head to mobilephonethrowing.co.uk to sign up for this year’s event.
