Top Ten Mobile Phone News Stories of the Week

Published January 22, 2010 by Andrew Boxall in News, Weekly Round-ups

Enjoy our roundup of some of the best mobile phone stories that you may have missed this week:

Nokia Maps1.  Nokia Confirm New Phone Launch Date.

But that’s all they’ll confirm at this stage.  At the same press event which told us all about the new free Ovi Maps navigation, Nokia have said we’ll see a new phone from them on the 26th January, but have asked for silence from the press when it comes to the nature of the hardware.  It’s never easy to choose a launch date, but with Apple’s big event taking place on the 27th January, Nokia will have to do something very special to remain in the public eye for more than a day or so.

2.   Bravo Gets Snapped.

The HTC Bravo is one of our most anticipated new releases but we’ve only seen renderings of the handset up until now, when a real photograph has been leaked on to the Internet.  It looks almost identical, plus it seems to confirm that the phone will indeed have an optical trackpad in place of a trackball.

3.   Acer Get Serious About the UK.

With a road map containing ten UK-bound releases during 2010, Acer have said they intend to become one of the top five UK  manufacturers before the end of the year.  The ten phones are all Android based and will follow the recent introduction of the Liquid, their first Android release.  The second Acer phone is expected at the end of Q1.

4.  China Hates Android.

Android may be looking good in the UK during 2010, but it’s not looking quite the same in China, where Google have forced their planned launch of two handsets to be delayed.  The Android phones were from Samsung and Motorola and were headed towards China Unicom, but in response to Google’s current issues with China – and vice-versa – a delay was deemed appropriate.

5.  Jawbone’s Talk Back.

If you wear a Bluetooth headset, then you’ll love this from Aliph, the makers of the Jawbone series.  Their new ICON range each comes with its own personality, be it a ‘thinker’ an ‘ace’ or a ‘bombshell’ for example, which then relays information, such as caller ID or battery status, to you through your earpiece.

6.  Will Cheap Android Phone Hit UK?

The Gigabyte GSmart is heading for Russia in February, where it’s going to cost less than the current cheapest Android phone, the HTC Tattoo.  It seems to run Android 1.6, and could do well as a PAYG smartphone over here.

Motorola Motoroi7.  Korea Get the Motoroi.

We remember seeing a leaked picture of the Motorola Motoroi back in the summer, but had little information to go on at the time.  Well, aside from confirming the name – presumably Roy for short – it appears the device is set to be Korea’s first Android phone and will then be rolled out in the US and the rest of the world.  It has a 3.7″ touchscreen, an 8 megapixel camera and HD video recording, plus an unsightly bulge where it shouldn’t have one.

8.  Smartphones Save Lives: Fact!

Dan Woolley, an American who was saved after 65 hours under the rubble following the terrible Haiti earthquakes, owes at least a part of his survival to his iPhone.  A first aid app helped him dress his wounds and the alarm kept him from falling asleep, ensuring he was alive when his rescuers found him.

9.  Pink is the New…Pink!

Remember Microsoft’s Pink project?  Well, it’s back and the rumour is we’ll see a release in the next two months!  As to what will be released, well, that’s anyone’s guess!

10.  Versace to Release Mobile Phone Range.

Why not, as seemingly every other designer out there has got in on the phone game at sometime or another!  Rather than going down the D&G, Prada or Armani route and partnering with a popular manufacturer, Versace have plumped for ModeLabs, who are responsible for Dior’s mobile phone collection.  The phones will be out in spring, but will be unveiled during the Parisian Haute Couture week starting on the 24th January.
