New Guinness Record for Mobile Phone Recycling

Mobile Phone RecyclingDid you know that there is a world record for the number of mobile phones recycled in one week? Not only is there a record but there are groups that are actively trying to break that record. And it looks like one group, Scope (which is a cerebral palsy charity), just might have managed to do that this year. The current record is 952 phones recycled in one week and it is believed that Scope beat that number although the official tally by the Guinness record team isn’t in yet. Not only was this challenge good publicity for the charity but it also helped to raise a lot of awareness about the importance of recycling mobile phones. Some of the things that people have learned as a result of all of the news about this record-breaking attempt include:

Approximately 4 million people will upgrade their phones this year but only about 3% of them will recycle their old mobile phones. Three quarters of consumers probably don’t even know how to go about recycling their phones. This shows that there is a desperate need to make it easier for people to recycle their old mobile phones!

Cash incentives make it a lot more likely that people will recycle their old mobile phones. The cash doesn’t even necessarily need to go to them (although results are likely better when it does). In this case, Scope received £3 for every phone that was donated. People who want to give to charity but who can’t afford to, may be willing to recycle their old mobile phones as a donation.

A big push in advertising can cause big results. Somewhere around 1000 phones were recycled in a single week just by this organization’s efforts.

Whether or not Scope officially broke the mobile phone recycling record might not be confirmed but it was certainly a good week for the green movement because of their efforts!
