Enjoy our roundup of some of the best mobile phone stories that you may have missed this week:
1. WinMo 7. Will It Or Won’t It Be At MWC?
According to a CNET reporter, yes, it will! The upcoming event will apparently serve as the platform for the new Microsoft OS’s official debut, which will be shortly followed by a developers presentation in March, summer 2010 completion and roll out by year end. With Apple’s big announcement out of the way, plus Nokia and LG’s decision not to attend; if this turns out to be factual, then Microsoft could just steal a lot of the MWC limelight.
2. LG Pop Goes Solar.
We happen to be big fans of the LG Pop, and really liked the idea of the solar panel add-on which was spoken about but never seen. However, the panel is finally set to be released in Germany and will cost a touch under 35 euros, or about £30, so we’re hoping a UK debut won’t be too far behind. The panel will give an extra three minutes talktime for an eleven minute charge.
3. More Mobiado Madness.
Made from aluminium, stainless steel and incorporating sapphire crystals, the new Mobiado Classic 712ZAF will be out soon. It’s not as feature-lite as many of its luxury cousins, as it has a 5 megapixel camera, GPS and a gesture control for muting/rejecting incoming calls. The price has yet to be announced, but we expect it to be on the wrong side of astronomical.
4. 3 Boosts Network.
Mobile network 3 has just erected its 10,000th 3G mast, with plans to add another 3000 over the coming year. The mast can be found in Shooters Hill, London and according to 3, contributes to a 93% coverage map of the UK population.
5. VoIP 3G Coming to iPhone.
The new Apple iPad runs the as-yet unreleased iPhone OS 3.2, which contains a change to the previous no VoIP over 3G ruling. VoIP software makers Fring, amongst others, have sent out press releases claiming that when the new software is released, we should all be able to chat for free using one of their clients. Good news indeed!
6. Motorola Ready Next Google Phone?
In their Q4 2009 financial meeting, Motorola have said they will be working with Google to market their next Android phone directly to the public, without going to one of the networks in the expected fashion. Presumably this will be one of the new phones added to the Nexus stable, even if it ends up not being named as such.
7. More App Predictions.
We have all heard how lucrative an application store can be, but analysts Futuresource have given their prediction as to what the market could be worth in 2013 – a whopping £9.2 billion! It’s not surprising every new product has to have an app store, is it!
8. Nokia Announce Q4 Finances.
In Nokia’s detailed end of 2009 finance details, it’s revealed that they shifted an impressive 12 million euros worth of handsets. This is slightly down on 2008′s figure but up on Q3 2009′s 9.8 million euros. Good news for Nokia then.
9. Firefox Coming to Android?
Although you can already download the mobile version of Firefox for the Nokia N900 and a few Windows Mobile devices, adding it to the more widespread Android OS would drag it into the mainstream. The rumour is that a Beta version of the browser formally known as Fennac will be out in February.
10. Visual Sound Phone to Help the Deaf.
This is a great looking concept with a worthy function. In the same way as the long-established home versions, this mobile converts a person’s voice into text and vice-versa.
