Toshiba K01 and TG02 Appear at MWC

Way back in April 2009, a leaked roadmap of Toshiba’s planned output for the remainder of the year introduced us to the TG02 and the K01, seemingly scheduled for mid-year release.  Obviously, this didn’t happen, but now at Mobile World Congress Toshiba have put both these models on display.

The TG02 is the follow-up to the TG01, the first Snapdragon equipped phone and the one which arguably started the whole ‘large screen’ trend currently gripping the industry.  The TG02 has:

  • Windows Mobile 6.5.
  • A 4.1″ capacitive touchscreen.
  • A 9.9mm slim chassis.
  • 1GHz Snapdragon processor.
  • MicroSD card slot.
  • Wi-Fi.

The 3G TG02 has changed one of the TG01’s biggest failings, it’s resistive touchscreen, to a capacitive one, so we’re hoping the user experience will be greatly improved and that fast processor will be able to be put to good use.  A 3.2 megapixel camera hides on the rear of the phone too.

The TG02 is joined by the Ko1, which looks like a slider version of the TG01/02.  The specification is as follows:

  • A 4.1″ OLED capacitive touchscreen.
  • Windows Mobile 6.5.
  • Slide-out QWERTY keyboard.
  • MicroSD card slot with support for 32GB SDHC cards.
  • 3G with HSDPA.

The K01 likely uses the same 1GHz processor as the TG01/02, but thanks to the slide-out keyboard it has a slightly thicker chassis, measuring around 13mm instead.

Neither of these new Toshiba smartphones have been given a price or release date as yet, but they are both likely to be more successful than the TG01, thanks to greater smartphone interest and a hopefully improved user experience.  We’ll let you know more when they tell us!

As the Toshiba TG01 was a true powerhouse, I wonder if this will push mobile performance in the same way. Hope they fixed the framerate issues though.
