20 Green iPhone Apps to Keep you Honest

Published February 22, 2010 by Kathryn Vercillo in Apps

You can say that you are environmentally friendly with your mobile phone. You don’t throw used handsets out because you know it’s better to recycle them. You might even go so far as to use solar power to charge your phone. But are you being as green as you honestly can be? Probably not, especially if you’re an iPhone user. Now, there’s nothing specifically eco-cruel about the iPhone. In fact, this phone might be one of the best out there in terms of providing accessibility to green apps. The problem is that if you’re not using them then you’re not really being as green as you could be with your phone.

Here’s a look at 20 green iPhone apps that you should be using:

GreenMap iPhone App. If you’re truly someone who tries to be green then you probably already know about GreenMap, a website that you can use to connect to find the greenest businesses in any given area. They’ve finally made an iPhone map that lets you easily use their service when you’re out and about. Support green businesses; use your phone to find them.

GoodGuide. Regardless of where you shop, some products are going to be greener than others. Goodguide is a barcode app that allows you to use your iPhone to scan products in stores in order to get information about how safe and how green the products are. This makes it really easy to be a smart green consumer. And it also lets you save favourites and otherwise personalise the app to make shopping even easier.

Ample Harvest’s iPhone App. Believe it or not, there are a lot of farmers out there who have more crops than they can handle. Even small local gardeners typically grow more food than they can eat before it goes bad. Why let that food go to waste? This app pairs those gardeners with hungry people to make sure that the food goes locally to someone who needs it rather than being thrown away.

Seasons. Being a responsible green consumer at the grocery store means that you only buy what is in season locally. This reduces shipping costs among offering other green benefits. This affordable iPhone app tells you what’s in season. It can be adjusted to just your geographic area to make sure that you only buy what’s in season locally. What a handy little shopping tool.

Green Sushi Selector. You may also want to make sure that you aren’t eating endangered species, right? Sushi is a food that a lot of people love but it can be very unfriendly to the earth. This great little app lets you whip out your iPhone, check about the status of the fish that it’s your sushi and easily make an informed decision about whether or not eating it is going to be a green act.

Vegetarian Smartlist. There is a strong argument for the idea that the vegetarian lifestyle is a greener lifestyle. If you believe this then you might want this app which gives you the low down on just how truly vegetarian many products are.

Green Card. Do you know how wasteful it is to print out and send business cards? Many people don’t even use all of the cards that they have printed and end up throwing them away. And of course, most of the people they do give them to are just throwing them away as well. What a waste. This cool iPhone app is a digital business card that you can use to trade your contact info with other green-minded iPhone users.

Meter Read. Do you know how much electricity you use in your home? This iPhone app can tell you. It takes a little bit of work because you have to actually take your phone out to your electricity meter a few times. However, it does give you an accurate picture of your home’s energy waste so that you know where you need to make some changes to be greener.

This is Green. Why stop with just improving your electricity use in the home? Why not use your iPhone to actually learn how you can improve your green habits in every single part of your home. This smart app can be used to walk around your house and get easy information on what you could be doing to be greener.

GreenMeter. This is one of the most innovative and popular green iPhone apps available. It actually takes information from your car as you are driving to determine what you can do as a driver to lower your carbon footprint. Although we all know that we should cut back on driving altogether, some people just can’t cut back anymore. This iPhone app will tell them how to drive in more fuel-efficient ways so they can be greener even without reducing their amount of driving. Genius!

Car Care. Another way to green your driving is to make sure that your cars are as up-to-date with maintenance and good gas mileage as possible. This app helps you keep on top of that.

Commute Greener. Another great green iPhone app for people who are often on the go (whether driving or bicycling or walking) is this social networking app. It measures your carbon footprint and lets you set target goals for reducing that footprint. More importantly, it connects you to friends and others where you can share stories and encourage one another to meet these green goals.

iPhorest. Want to do something to green the world but feel like you’re always too busy to contribute? This app lets you do it easily. Download the app and you’ll see a tree download to your iPhone. That’s not all though, a real tree will be planted somewhere in the world just because you’ve done this.

Jungfrau Climate Guide. Many people are interested in the Skeptical Science app right now which is an iPhone app that helps prove to doubters that climate change is real. This app might be a more powerful way of proving that; it lets you walk up to glaciers in certain regions and receive information about what the same glacier looked like one hundred years ago. There’s no denying that climate change has had an impact!

My Water Diary. Water is a resource that we need but we’re rapidly depleting our world’s supply. Do you waste water? You might not even be aware that you do but this handy little iPhone app will help you track your water usage to see exactly how much you’re using and how you’re using it.

Green Charging App. Hopefully you already engage in green habits when it comes to charging your mobile phone. Using solar power chargers or even wind power chargers would be a smart move. But if not, you could at least make sure that you’re only using as much energy as you actually need to fully charge your phone. This app makes sure that you know when your phone is done charging so that you don’t keep using energy unnecessarily to charge it further.

Yowza. This is a mobile coupon app. How is that green? Well, it allows you to find the best deals within the shortest distance from your current location which reduces the waste of going from store to store. Plus the deals are coupons that are right on your phone so there’s no paper or ink or mailing to waste.

ShopGreen. Learn how you can actually be a better green shopper. You download this app and then answer a bunch of questions about your shopping habits. Your answers are analyzed and you are provided with a concise plan for becoming a lot greener in your shopping.

Green Energy Now. Staying on top of the latest green news will help to make sure that you always know about what you can do to improve your own green behaviour. This app is a green news app that lets you easily read that news anywhere on your iPhone.

Green Lemur. Sometimes the best way to be better at being green is to just constantly remind yourself about all of the ways that you can do it. This iPhone app will give you tons of green tips that can help you be more eco-conscious throughout the day.

I can recommend Commute Greener! It works very well, if you make a commitment to change your habits. IMHO is a long term use app, not one of those instant gratifications that are out there.
