Nexus One UK Bound, But Who Will Buy It?

The US release of the Google Nexus One was an exciting event, ending the many, many, many rumours surrounding an actual ‘Google Phone’ and giving the world a very impressive device.  Armed with a 3.7″ AMOLED screen, a Snapdragon 1GHz processor, Android 2.1 OS, a 5 megapixel camera and all the usual GPS, Wi-Fi and 3G trimmings, the Nexus One was a proper mobile powerhouse.

Now, after a little less than two months later, the rumour that Vodafone will be the UK’s official Nexus One network looks like it will come true, as they prepare sell the phone from April.  Reports seem to indicate that like the US, if you want a Nexus One with a contract it will still need to be ordered via Google’s specific site, but there is no word whether an unlocked version will be sold here too, cancelling out the hefty import charges currently blighting the device.

In January, the Nexus One had a great specification which made it standout from the crowd.  But will this still be the case in April?  The big challenger to its success will be the new HTC Desire, because it’s essentially the same phone and will potentially be available on a broader range of networks.  Then there is the other HTC Mobile World Congress darling, the Legend, which despite the lack of a Snapdragon processor and a slightly smaller screen, easily beats both the Desire and the Nexus One in terms of style, while retaining the majority of the features.

If those two are simply more of the same, then how about some choices outside of the HTC camp?  First, we should never discount the iPhone 3GS from the equation, or the Motorola Milestone for that matter, while secondly, there is the chance we may see the Samsung Galaxy 2 around the same time too.  Of course, you could return to HTC and just grab an HD2 instead, or if you really want to be different, wait for the Samsung Wave!

As cool as the Nexus One is, has it arrived in the UK a little too late to make an impression?  Are there just too many different smartphone options here, especially as the Nexus One’s spec list doesn’t make it stand out anymore?  We’re guessing it will come down to the price Vodafone attaches too it, something which hasn’t been mentioned yet.

Have to say already ordered and had mine delivered a few weeks ago. Blown away by its beauty, its speed, its functionality and the integration with my personal gmail and corporate Lotus Notes accounts.

Don’t see many other smartphones having the same features or them being so sweetly executed.

Perhaps it is because I was using a 3-year old Windows mobile phone before, but I waited and waited and waited until the right phone came along, and this is it.

Its not Apple and its open. Amazing.
