A while back we questioned where the rumoured HTC Incredible would fit in their range, as the specification known at the time was surprisingly close to that of the HTC Desire and the Google Nexus One. We now have a clearer picture of the Incredible’s spec list and it’s not that, um, incredible.
According to DailyTech.com, the Incredible will be heading to the US network Verizon in the next few weeks – a speedy appearance given that the phone is still not official – and that it would be running the latest v2.1 of Google Android. HTC fans will recall that both the Desire and the Nexus One are powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 1GHz processor, as will the Incredible, however it will be slowed to 768MHz.
They also say the Incredible will have an 8 megapixel camera to make up for this, plus an odd 6GB of flash memory, a microSD card slot, an FM radio and a slightly thicker casing that the N1 and the Desire.
This answers our question of why HTC would release yet another top-spec smartphone; it’s because they aren’t. Underclocking the Snapdragon processor will provide a clear upgrade path towards the Desire for anyone wanting a full power version, yet it should still be plenty to run everything except the most power-hungry game applications. It reminds us of Porsche’s ability to upsell drivers from the Boxster to the Cayman and finally to the 911, simply by showing them the BHP figures of each.
So, we have a few more details on the Incredible and talk of a US launch, but still no word on whether the phone will make it to European shores. The thing is, do we really need it? After all, how much cheaper is this going to be in comparison to the stunning HTC Legend? We know which one we would go for!
