How to Set Hotmail as the Default Email Client on the iPhone

Published March 30, 2010 by Harriet Rhodes in Apple, Guides, How to...

There are a load of different email clients available, one of the most popular being Hotmail. I for one, have had the same Hotmail account for years and wouldn’t want to change it just so I can access it on my iPhone. Unfortunately, Gmail is the mailer of choice for the Apple devices so many have to do just that. For those of you who don’t want the hassle of resending your new address out to your entire contacts list here’s a handy solution.

Before we begin, you need to make sure that your Hotmail account supports forwarding mail. You can check this by going into the Hotmail options menu in your account. Why is this necessary? Because, your iPhone will still host its beloved Gmail account, but all your incoming messages will go through Hotmail first, confused? Read on…

First of all you will need to set up a Gmail account, in order to get the email system up and running on your phone. Head on over to the Google website and you can usually find a sign up option for Gmail. Once this is done, open your account and follow these steps:

  • Got to Settings and open up the Forwarding & POP/IMAP options
  • Hit enable IMAP
  • Click Save
  • Go to Settings > Accounts > Add another email address
  • Type in your Hotmail account details
  • Open a new browser and login to your Hotmail account
  • Go to inbox, where you will find a message from Gmail
  • Open it and follow the link
  • Now go to Options > Forwarding and set it so that you forward all mail to your new Gmail account

You have completed set up in the Hotmail zone so it’s back to the Gmail account to finish the setup process.

  • Open up your Gmail inbox, where you should find a message from Hotmail
  • Open the message and follow the link
  • Go to Settings, your Hotmail email address should have appeared in the new menu
  • Click on the Make Default link

From now on every Hotmail message will be sent to the Gmail account too. Now you need to learn how to get into the email account via your iPhone. Open up the Settings and head to Mail. Click Add Account to create a new email option, when asked choose Other and insert the following info:

  • Name: Your Name
  • Address: Your Current Hotmail Email Address
  • Description: Anything You Want (Something like Hotmail would probably work well)

Incoming Mail Server:

  • Hostname: imap.gmail.com
  • Username: Your new Gmail Email Address
  • Password: Your New Gmail Password

Outgoing Mail Server

  • Hostname: smtp.gmail.com
  • Username: Your New Gmail Email Address
  • Password: Your New Gmail Password

Leave the rest of the options as they are, save your changes and exit the menu. You are now ready to receive Hotmail emails via your iPhone.
