If you’ve looked on with envious eyes at software developers creating their own applications for the iPhone, Symbian, Windows, Android and any amount of other mobile platforms, but couldn’t join in the fun because you didn’t know any programming languages, Google may have launched the exact tool for you.
The App Inventor can be found inside Google Labs and is an app creation tool for the Android operating system, but made for people who aren’t programmers. According to Google, the App Inventor can be used to write any application you can think of, from a new game to an educational tool for children. It even has the ability to use the GPS receiver in your phone, so you can make your app location-aware.
While the App Inventor could be used to write apps that could then be entered into the Android Market, it could also work really well for personalising your phone. For example, if you’re bad at remembering birthdays but always want to send a message, we’re sure you could write an app that sent an automatic text to whichever friend was celebrating that day. It may not be useful to anyone else, but great for you!
So many people have ideas for apps but don’t have the ability or resources to turn them into reality, but Google’s App Inventor could change that. Why not have a go?
