At the beginning of the year you may not have heard of ZTE, but as the initial months passed the Chinese manufacturer became known as one of Palm’s potential suitors and then as the company behind several Android phones rumoured for release in the UK during 2010.
ZTE has now arrived in the UK and it’s with the Racer, their first branded handset available only on the 3 network. The pair have an established relationship but this is the first time ZTE have put their name on a phone, leaving 3 to brand the device’s rear cover.
Here’s the spec:
- Google Android v2.1
- A 3.2 megapixel camera.
- A 2.8″ 240×320 resolution touchscreen.
- Assisted GPS.
- 3.5mm headphone socket.
- MicroSD card slot.
- Wi-Fi.
- 3G with HSDPA.
Not a bad specification we’re sure you’ll agree, especially as it can be picked up around the £100-mark on PAYG. Of course, for this price, sacrifices have to be made. For a start, the design is hardly inspiring and the touchscreen is of the resistive variety, so you’ll have to give it a more authoritative prod to get it to do what you want.
The processor is a Qualcomm 7227 running at 600Mhz with 256MB or ROM and RAM backing it up, plus there is Bluetooth, an FM radio and an accelerometer.
The Racer only weighs 100 grams too, so it’s really pocket friendly and with a spec and price like this, it could be worth a go if you’re new to the smartphone game. Expect it to be on sale sometime in August.
