Nokia Announces X3-02 Touch and Type

A day ahead of their NokiaBox event, Nokia have given the world the Nokia X3-02 Touch and Type, a clunky name for what looks to be a very sleek little phone. What makes the X3-02 standout is the combination of both a touchscreen and an alphanumeric keypad, all driven by that familiar S40 user interface.

Before we go into more detail, here are the key features:

  • It’s 3G with HSPDA.
  • Wi-Fi with b/g/n support.
  • A 5 megapixel camera.
  • 3.5mm headphone socket.
  • 2.4″ QVGA touchscreen.
  • Bluetooth.

Even though the X3-02 isn’t a smartphone, in addition to the Wi-Fi and 3G, you’ll be able to use the phone to check your email, use instant messaging services and update your Twitter and Facebook account, plus there is even access to the Ovi Store where you’ll be able to download games and applications.

The media aspect is also excellent. The phone has a dedicated music key to instantly launch the player and a microSD card slot where you can fit a 16GB card filled with music. A YouTube client and an FM radio complete the list.

As you’ll see in the video, operating the X3-02 is a combination of typing on the traditional keypad and using touch on the touchscreen. One of the major drawbacks for many people who want a touchscreen phone is the lack of physical keys, something which the X3-02 solves rather elegantly. It’s also ideal if you’re a Nokia user and want to enjoy the touch sensation without learning a whole new operating system.

The body looks really great too, with wide, easy to use buttons, a sleek chassis and a brushed aluminium battery cover. The X3-02 measures just 9.6mm thick and weights a super-lightweight 78 grams! Anyone who thinks phones these days are rubbish at providing a decent standby time, Nokia quote 17 days from the X3′s cell!

Nokia expect to launch the X3-02 globally during Q3 and the expected unsubsidised price is likely to be around £100, which we think is a bargain for 5 megapixels, Wi-Fi, a touchscreen and a super thin, good-looking phone!
